The American Society of Furniture Designers recently awarded the first David Kline Scholarship Award in the amount of $500 to Christopher Sandomenico, a student at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The award which was named in honor of the late David Kline, freelance designer and past president of ASFD was offered to students majoring in furniture design. Nominees were asked to submit a "mini portfolio" of sketches, renderings and details of one furniture design project including a written essay. Douglas Krieger, ASFD board member and scholarship chairman presented the award to Sandomenico at Kendall to an audience which included the college president and members of the furniture design department faculty. Christopher's design project was entitled "British Colonial/Trade Winds" and was described by Krieger as a "very competent and admirable design project; one which is in the mainstream of current home fashions". ASFD was organized in 1981 to advance and promote the furniture design profession and to educate members of the furniture industry and the general public of the value of the services of furniture designers. The Scholarship is intended to be an annual award.
