Durham Furniture of Durham, Ontario, has been selected as a regional finalist in Canada's 50 Best Managed Private Companies Program in 1999. The announcement was made on October 28, 1999, at a reception at the CIBC Leadership Centre in King City, Ontario. These finalists will be narrowed down to the eventual 1999 50 Best national winners by a panel of senior Canadian business and academic leaders, and will be revealed in the National Post on December 15, 1999. Canada's 50 Best Managed Private Companies Program is designed to recognize and honor companies that have implemented best business practices. The program is in its seventh year and is sponsored by Arthur Andersen, CIBC, National Post and PeopleSoft Canada. Phase 2 of the program involves a detailed application and interview process on the applicant company's premises that can last from two to six hours during which the company's management practices are thoroughly examined and evaluated. Located in Durham, Ontario, approximately 95 miles northwest of Toronto, Durham Furniture was established in 1899 in the heartland of Ontario's wood furniture industry. Several changes in ownership occurred over the years with the latest in 1992 when the company was purchased by a management group along with other local investors and an investment company from Kitchener, Ontario. Durham Furniture manufactures a quality line of medium to upper-medium priced solid wood bedroom in cherry, ash and maple. The product is distributed through independent retail furniture stores in Canada and the United States.
