Stuart Shevin, president of Standard Furniture, Birmingham, Ala., and of the National Home Furnishings Association (NHFA), announced that the association celebrates the United States Senate’s passage of H.R. 2415, the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2000, and calls for President Clinton to sign the bill into law. "It’s been eight years in the works and this is the first time it has gotten to the President’s desk. This Bill represents between $500 million and a billion dollars in consumer savings. The association strongly urges President Clinton to sign this much needed legislation into law," says Steve DeHaan, executive vice president of NHFA. The House of Representatives and the Senate passed H.R. 2415 with veto-proof votes, and sent the bankruptcy bill with the most positive reforms in 20 years to President Clinton to sign into law. Provisions of the bill will make it harder for high income people to erase credit card and other debts in court. Founded in 1919, the National Home Furnishings Association, headquartered in High Point, N.C., is a trade association servicing the specific needs of home furnishings retailers. NHFA provides essential information, government representation, professional education and training, and business and operation tools to its more than 3,000 members, which represent more than 10,000 stores nationwide.
