Bob’s Discount Furniture announced that it is providing support for mid-Atlantic communities recovering from Hurricane Sandy through a variety of grassroots charitable efforts. Following the storm, Bob’s quickly responded to needs across the region by providing donations and assisting with large-scale deliveries, in addition to individual employees’ efforts, such as collecting supplies needed in the affected areas.
“Our sympathy goes out to the communities and families whose lives have been thrown into turmoil by the storm,” said Bob Kaufman, co-founder of Bob’s Discount Furniture. “Our company and staff are committed to supporting those affected by this disaster, while continuing to provide significant financial assistance to area schools and charitable organizations in communities where our stores are located.”
Bob’s Director of Delivery Operations Peter Sorrentino has been especially involved with relief efforts. Thanks to the efforts of he and his Baltimore-based colleagues, Bob’s has been providing trucks to transport loads of food, clothing and other relief supplies collected in New Milford, Conn. by his sister, Tracey Sorrentino-Sheedy, to New York City to assist hard-hit storm survivors on Staten Island. Sorrentino arranged for volunteer drivers to use the company’s 26-foot box trucks for the 100-mile trip when they were not being used for Bob’s furniture deliveries.
“Somehow within 12 hours we coordinated this whole effort. It just came together,” says Sorrentino, who was born and raised in the borough of Staten Island. “Bob’s will continue to support the hurricane relief efforts by doing whatever we can to get people back on their feet again.”
Additionally, Bob’s has provided relief assistance in the following ways:
Employees at Bob’s 43 stores across the region have collected nearly 1,000 Thanksgiving turkeys for people affected by the storm, and the company is matching those donations with 1,400 additional turkeys. Half of the birds will go to Island Harvest, the largest hunger-relief organization on New York’s Long Island, and the other half will be distributed by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which serves 18 of that state’s 21 counties.
Bob’s also has donated 264 pillows to the evacuated nursing home patients being temporarily sheltered at New York City’s Brooklyn Technical High School.
Bob’s also has agreed to help the Andover, Mass.-based Sending Sunshine charity to transport additional loads of relief supplies to Hurricane Sandy victims.
The company is continuing to evaluate how best to support the affected communities during their recovery. Bob’s has longstanding relationships with many charitable organizations and is currently considering how best to aid these groups, including the American Red Cross, which is working hard to assist storm victims.
