COCO-MAT Opens Flagship New York Store Showcasing Premium Mattresses

COCO-MAT, an award-winning producer of all-natural bedding, announced the opening of its 5,650 square-foot flagship store in SoHo. The two-story shop is the company’s first stand-alone store in the US and part of COCO-MAT’s long-term commitment to expand its presence in North America. COCO-MAT invites customers to “sleep on nature” through its line of mattresses handcrafted using 100% natural materials and environmentally friendly manufacturing methods. The popularity of its high-end beds has lead to the opening of more than 60 COCO-MAT stores in eleven countries and partnerships with more than 300 luxury hotels to feature its mattresses.
The New York store is located at 49 Mercer Street between Broome and Grand Streets, with interiors designed by acclaimed architect Thomas Juul-Hansen and award-winning lighting designer Hervé Descottes. The store will have a look and feel that exemplifies COCO-MAT’s philosophy of graciousness and simple elegance. Customers will be able to sample the full range of beds while consulting with specially trained sales associates who provide individualized recommendations. COCO-MAT mattresses are imported from the company’s privately owned factories in Xanthi, Northern Greece, where they are each handmade. The company has garnered numerous awards since its 1989 founding in Greece. Global sales totaled $70 million in 2011 alone.

COCO-MAT beds are constructed of multiple layers of all-natural materials, providing optimal, elastic support to the human body, without the use of metal springs. The materials include tropical coconut fibers, seaweed gathered from Greek beaches, fibers culled from cactus plants, horsehair treated with natural rubber, goose down and wool. The mattresses are then set atop ergonomic bases made from solid wood like pine, oak and beech. The beds are each made per order, in line with the dimensions and requirements given by the customer.
COCO-MAT places a large emphasis on protecting the environment and is committed to manufacturing products in the most sustainable way possible. The materials used to make the mattresses usually have a 96% recycling rate. The company has invested heavily in new production methods that minimize the amount of waste and cut-offs, often reusing remaining materials to make additional products. COCO-MAT also refrains from treating its products with chemicals and relies exclusively on ecological, non-toxic, non-aggressive dyes if materials are not used in their natural state and color. Plastic wrapping typically used to protect the mattresses and pillows has been replaced by reusable fabric cases.
The New York store will consist of two floors, with galleries on the first that showcase how the mattresses are made and educate customers on the company’s methodology. Store visitors will also be able to view top selling items like the 4-layer mattress and the new line of Triton beds. The second level, located underneath the first, features a specially designed sleeping suite that allows customers to test mattresses in a private, enclosed space. The store will also feature a kitchen providing refreshments and specially designed kids area which further COCO-MAT’s longstanding tradition of customer hospitality.
The lower floor also has designated areas for the store to work with hotel clients who would like to feature the mattresses in their rooms. COCO-MAT has supplied beds to some of the world’s leading luxury properties, including the London Landmark Hotel, Hidden Hotel in Paris, Ritz-Carlton Barcelona, Hotel De L’Europe in Amsterdam, Athens Sofitel and almost 300 other luxury hotels.
The New York store is the first standalone initiative in COCO-MAT’s planned North American expansion efforts. The company was encouraged by the earlier success of a shop-in-shop it set up in New York’s ABC Carpet & Home that it will still continue to operate. COCO-MAT mattresses are currently sold in China, Saudi Arabia, France, Spain, Greece, Netherlands and other countries. In addition to its own stores, COCO-MAT sells its products through point of sale locations that are typically situated in some of the world’s leading shops.
