Thos. Moser Recognized for Innovation and Excellence

Furniture World News Desk on 8/15/2014

Thos. Moser reported that it  is being recognized by the Maine Wood Products Association (MWPA) with the “Pine Tree Award”.

“The Pine Tree Award allows us to honor the creativity and innovative spirit of our member companies,” said Dan Crowley, Executive Director, MWPA. “Thos. Moser is the epitome of how Maine-based wood product manufacturers are not only competing in, but succeeding in an ever-changing and always demanding marketplace.”

Since the company’s inception, the story of every Thos. Moser piece is underpinned by the same basic tenet: no function without beauty. Thos. Moser maintains an unwavering commitment to making beautiful furniture of the highest quality. Its processes have advanced with technology, but the craft of the furniture remains authentic. “The Pine Tree Award” recognizes companies that seek out innovative processes and solutions that demonstrate excellence throughout the production process.

“We’ve adopted new processes very thoughtfully – we’re looking to achieve balance between man and machine which allows for planning both precision and spontaneity into our processes,” said Rick Foss, Production Manager for Thos. Moser. “A hands-on approach is what makes Thos. Moser furniture special. Each piece individually signed by the craftsman who made it, allowing it to stand out as a truly unique piece in this age of mass production.”

The advent of new technology is coupled with the way Thos. Moser manages its supply chain – another reason for the recognition from the Maine Wood Products Association (MWPA). By adopting a “lean manufacturing” model, the company is alleviated of unnecessary inventory which can contribute to additional waste, from a time and materials standpoint.

“One of the most important advances in our process has been the introduction of ‘lean manufacturing’ to the shop floor,” said Tim McIntyre, Supply Chain Manager for Thos. Moser. “This process has helped us to trim raw material stock levels down to just what’s needed, when it’s needed.”

Thos. Moser joined fellow members of the WMPA on August 13 at Bates College for an Awards banquet.
