Furniture Mall of Kansas – Opening 5 Stores in the Kansas City Area

The Furniture Mall of Kansas reported that it has big plans for the old Benchmark Home Furnishings building at Kansas City Road & Renner Boulevard, across from Bass ProShop in Olathe. Renovations of the 160,000 square-foot building have already begun and the project is scheduled for completion in March 2015.

The new Furniture Mall will include five stores: RoomMakers, Discovery Furniture, Marling’s Furniture, Mattress Headquarters and Abbey Flooring Headquarters. Jeff Winter, co-owner of the five-store mall explains, “we make it easy to narrow down the big selection by having five distinct stores that offer a good, better and best option, depending on the budget and needs of our guests.”

The Winter family has owned and operated retail furniture locations since 1933, with stores currently in Topeka and Lawrence. Winter describes their family business as “a big selection with a local connection. We want our guests to have the ‘big box’ selection with the feel and experience of a small family store.”

The Furniture Mall of Kansas will be moving its Lawrence operation in January, closing that store, to keep staff and open the new Furniture Mall of Kansas in Olathe. “This was a big decision for us as the people of Lawrence have embraced us since opening in 2010. Our guests have made it clear that selection is very important and the Lawrence location only has room for 3 of our 5 stores with much less selection. We hope our Lawrence customers will appreciate the expanded selection and continue to support us in Olathe and Topeka,” said Jamie Winter, co-owner. The Furniture Mall of Kansas -Olathe will open with existing employees from the Lawrence location and will hire an additional 120 team members from the Kansas City area.

Not to ignore the elephant in the room, the owners are often asked, “How do you compete with the big companies?” The seasoned Winter family has eighty-one years invested in the furniture business. “We’ve seen trends come and go, some successful, and some not.
