Bob’s Discount Furniture Awards $25,000 to Gov. John Fairfield Elementary School of Saco, Maine

Bob’s Discount Furniture reported that it  presented a $25,000 check to Gov. John Fairfield School of Saco, Maine, the winner of this year’s ninth annual Celebrate the Arts contest. The school is determining how to best use the funds to enhance its visual, creative, and performing arts programs to benefit the entire student body.

“We’re always excited to see the impact that additional funding for the arts can make on schools and their students,” said Cathy Poulin, public relations director, Bob’s Discount Furniture. “Bob’s understands the importance of keeping arts and culture in our schools, which is why we’re so pleased to be able to show our support for these vitally important programs.”

The winning school was randomly selected from nearly 4,000 entries – the largest number in the contest’s history – submitted from across the 11 states where Bob’s Discount Furniture operates. This year’s winning entry came from Fairfield School parent Carrie Green.

“Access to a robust arts curriculum is important to me,” said Carrie Greene. “Art gives my kids a freedom to be creative. In that creativity, they find a resulting sense of pride and accomplishment that builds confidence and makes them happy.”

Bob’s Discount Furniture started the Celebrate the Arts contest in 2006 after seeing numerous school districts dealing with budget cuts by scaling back their fine arts and cultural programs. The company’s charitable Outreach Program created the annual contest to call attention to the problem and help schools in the communities it serves to support and maintain their arts programs. Since then, Bob’s has awarded more than $300,000 to support arts programs in the schools.

“We’re so excited by this award, which will help broaden our childrens’ horizons and spark their creativity by strengthening our cultural arts programs,” said Maureen McMullin the school’s principal. “Thanks to Bob’s, our students will have even more opportunities to enjoy and participate in the arts.”
