Diamond Furniture & Mattress Executive Announces Retirement

Furniture World News Desk on 6/21/2016

Diamond Furniture & Mattress recently announced the retirement of Gary Diamond, president, after 44 years serving the Southern New Jersey area.

A retirement sale in two stores, located at 6304 Black Horse Parkway in Egg Harbor and at 5401 Route 42 South in Turnersville, commences Thur., Jun. 16. Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) is managing the sale.

Founded in 1927, Gary Diamond’s father Herman S. Diamond launched Diamond Furniture as a door-to-door purveyor of small household merchandise, allowing customers to make weekly payments on an account basis. Over time, customers began asking if he could provide appliances and furniture. Soon, the first Diamond store was opened by the Diamond family and Tom Stoeckle in Philadelphia, which included a small staff.

Diamond Furniture grew quickly but, even as it moved into new locations, the company remained a part of the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 1976, a fire destroyed the company’s store at 2929 Kensington Ave. In order to survive, the Diamond family decided to sell furniture directly from their warehouse, offering low prices to raise cash rather than selling primarily on store credit.

To everyone’s surprise, this new approach generated even more sales and customer interest than before. This idea evolved into the current Diamond business model, which focuses on keeping overhead and other expenses to a minimum so that the company can offer customers low prices and outstanding value.

Diamond Furniture also believes in providing superior service to its customers. For five straight years (2008-2012), customers voted Diamond Furniture the “Best of South Jersey” for home furnishings in the prestigious Courier-Post Reader’s Choice competition. Diamond also has been honored by its peers, receiving the Retailer of the Year and Presidential awards from the Tri-State Home Furnishings Association.

Active in the furniture industry as well as his community, Gary Diamond has served as president and chairman of the board of the Tri-State Home Furnishings Association.

“Since 1927, customer satisfaction leading to repeat purchases and referrals has been our first and foremost goal,” said Diamond, who is retiring after 44 years with the company. “We strive to make your shopping experience positive for everyone, from before the sale to after delivery.”

Over the years, Diamond Furniture & Mattress stores, which are independently owned and operated, have become the Tri-State region of southern New Jersey, southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware’s top destinations for stylish, quality furnishings at an exceptional value. At one time, Diamond Furniture & Mattress had seven stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, with annual revenues of $33.5 million.

“This retirement sale event offers customers an opportunity to buy brand name furniture at deeply discounted prices,” Diamond said. “As we’ve always said, ‘Nobody beats a Diamond deal!’”
