Leggett & Platt® Home Furniture Components (HFC), based in Carthage, Mo., reported that it was nominated for the home furnishings industry’s Sage Award for environmental excellence. The Sage Award, launched in 2008 by the American Home Furnishings Alliance and Cargill’s BiOH®, is presented to environmental innovators in the home furnishings and bedding industries. The competition is open to retail, manufacturing and supplier companies. HFC was named one of two finalists for the Sage Award in response to its environmental initiatives.

Leggett & Platt has produced bedding components for over 125 years and sells to over 1,500 furniture makers worldwide. All 13 of the company’s HFC facilities implement the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s Enhancing Furniture’s Environmental Culture (EFEC) voluntary environmental management system.

Since beginning EFEC management in 2008, HFC has realized beneficial reductions in energy, water, raw material, waste and packaging use. Notably, No-Sag Products in Kendallville, Ind., one of HFC’s branches, earned Leggett & Platt the 2011 Indiana Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for its reuse and recycling practices.

Sage Award entrants were judged on sustainability efforts, social or community involvement and company success. The winner and finalists were selected by eight judges chosen from leaders in the furniture and bedding industry, environmental journalists, sustainability experts and the furniture industry business press.

As one of two Sage Award finalists, HFC will be featured in a customized video spotlighting its environmental achievements at the 2012 Furniture Industry Sustainability Summit in Raleigh, N.C., in February, as well as on the Sage Award website (www.SageAward.org) for a year.
