The Interior Design Show, Canada’s premiere residential design event, will kick off 2002 with a spectacular line-up of speakers, special events and participants, plus new dates and a new location. The Show promises to "get to the heart of design" for the over 50,000 people who are expected to attend the event from February 14-17, 2002, at The National Trade Centre at Exhibition Place, Toronto, The Opening Preview for IDS 2002 sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Canada and Canadian House and Home magazine in support of Casey House, will take place on Valentine’s Night, Thursday, February 14, 2002, and is an exclusive opportunity for the trade and public to view the Show before anyone else! Opening Preview visitors can get down and sample not only great food and heart warming entertainment sponsored by Guvernment Productions, the will also get to enjoy a presentation by the "British knight of good design", the imperial wizard of British – and European lifestyle, Sir Terence Conran, who will be celebrating 50 years in the design business in 2002. Conran set up his first furniture making business in 1952, in a basement studio in Notting Hill. In the 60s his first home furnishings shop Habitat, was at the forefront of British design much the same way Mary Quant was with fashion, and The Beatles were with music. Conran’s genius was in identifying a new market and knowing what it wanted before it did…. and he still does! Conran now has three huge home furnishings stores in London and an expanding empire of shops and restaurants in Europe, Asia and the US. While home furnishings are the backbone of Conran’s world, restaurants are his passion. He has twenty-three bars and restaurants around the globeConran has published numerous books on interior design, he designs products, furnishings and interiors, plus he has worked with many of the leading designers of our time. Sir Terence Conran’s visit to the Show is sponsored in part by The British Council. And there’s more!! The Globe and Mail will unveil the million dollar exhibit RETREAT, four unique 600 sq. ft. interiors, created specifically for the Show by top Canadian designers and architects signaling a return to peace and tranquility in residential design. This unique show feature will be created by the very talented architects and interior design firms of B|H Design Consultants Inc.; Johnson Chou Inc.; Giannone Associates; and TAS DESIGNBUILD. The Opening night festivities will be captured by HGTV who will broadcast a one hour special live from the Show. Hilton Toronto has joined the Show for 2002 as our official hotel sponsor and will provide accommodation for our spectacular line up of international speakers. TRADE TALKS, sponsored by AZURE magazine, is the international lecture series featured on the Trade Day, Friday, February 15, 2002. Open to the design and architectural industry only, the program will include presentations and thought provoking insights on design from some exceptional design talent including Helsinki’s rising product design star Ilkka Suppanen of SNOWCRASH; internationally renowned design curator Paola Antonelli from New York’s Museum of Modern Art; plus Milan’s multifaceted product design visionary Piero Lissoni, whose firm Studio Lissoni specializes architecture, interior and graphic design projects. Presentations will be scheduled throughout the day at The Show Stage. Our successful speaker series on the weekend has been reformatted and is now called DESIGN TALKS. It is open to everyone on Saturday, February 16, and Sunday February 17, 2002. Sponsored by PARA Paints, the series will feature lecture presentations and lots of creative thinking by great Canadian and international design professionals. The DESIGN TALKS Saturday session will feature editors of major international design publications including Deyan Sudjic, editor of Milan-based DOMUS; Karrie Jacobs, editor-in-chief of San Francisco’s dwell; and Chee Pearlman, design columnist for The New York Times and former editor of I.D. magazine. These tireless champions of design will talk about their views on the current influences and future directions of design. Sunday DESIGN TALKS speakers will focus on the theme of "retreat" as it relates to their work in designing residential properties and remote dwellings. Speakers will include Canadian architect extraordinaire Brigitte Shim of Shim Suttcliffe Architects, Toronto; award winning Brian MacKay-Lyons of Brian Mackay-Lyons Architecture Urban Design, Halifax; plus super hot South African-born architect Lindy Roy of ROY, New York. Presentations will be scheduled throughout the day at The Show Stage. The Interior Design Show 2002 will feature a number of special exhibits including The Hot Seat presented by Canadian Interiors, and Queen Street Design sponsored by NOW magazine. Rogers Business Solutions teams up with super cool Cecconi Simone to present SOS (Small Office Spaces), and the Royal Danish Consulate General will feature Celebrating Arne Jacobsen 100 Years. These special exhibits will add to the mix of over 250 designers, cool retailers, showrooms and manufacturers who know what’s at the heart of good design. Toronto has become THE centre for design in Canada and continues to garner international attention for the design talent and creative design companies that are active in the city. The Interior Design Show will take place at The National Trade Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto, February 14-17, 2002. Public and the Trade will be welcome at the Opening Preview on Thursday, February 14, 2002. Tickets are $35.00 per person in advance and $40.00 at the door. Friday, February 15, 2002 the Show will be open to the Architectural and Design Trade only. Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17, 2002 the Show will be open to the Trade and to the public.
