In recognition of his steadfast support of the San Francisco Mart for the past 52 years, John Ullman, president of Henry Ullman & Associates, will receive a Lifetime Platinum Pass Award from the Mart on May 21. The Mart will pay tribute to him at a special tenant breakfast held in his honor. In 1952, Ullman began working for his dad, who opened the showroom in 1943 – just three years after he planned an escape from Nazi Germany for himself and his family. After his dad’s death in 1959, Ullman became owner, with his mother as his partner. The Henry Ullman showroom has been a great asset to the Mart, adding the dimension of fireplace accessories to its offerings. The showroom has carried two of its lines since its inception – Portland Willamette and Pilgrim Hearthwares. Other current lines include the Bernard Collection, Gonzalo’s Furniture, Kenroy International, Lynx Professional Grills and Stone County Iron Works. Ullman has enjoyed his experience in the industry and has made a lot of friends. While health complications compel him to retire, the Portola Valley resident plans to study piano and volunteer. The showroom at the Mart will close, but Ullman’s business associate, Jon Kermit, will continue representing the lines out of San Jose.
