Universal Furniture recently announced plans to debut a new collection called Spaces, at High Point Market.

Spaces is a group of furnishings befitting a first home or a high-rise apartment. Although it’s defined by size – smaller in scale – it’s large in scope, with more than 75 skus in styles ranging from contemporary to traditional and transitional.

The average size of a new home has decreased according to the National Association of Home Builders, and it’s expected to decrease again. It’s a move that coincides with a new era of homebuyers looking to make their first purchase; a cohort that values features more than size.

“Spaces addresses the constraints of real life for younger Americans living in modestly sized rooms that require modestly sized furniture,” said Universal Furniture Director of Marketing Neil MacKenzie. “We designed the collection to offer multiple fashion preferences, but all fit within a smaller footprint.”

The diverse collection includes a mixture of finishes from light maple to white lacquer, bleached walnut, wire-brushed oak and rich walnut with materials including wood, glass, metal and stone.

Within the bedroom portion of the Spaces showroom, one bedroom vignette will feature a heavily carved headboard while the next houses a simple platform, followed by another with inset caning. All will be offered in queen size.

“The style palette is wide open,” said MacKenzie. “Scale is the defining element.”

The dining options veer toward contemporary style choices. Round and rectangular, four-leg table bases available in a dark bronze metal can be matched with one of five table tops: walnut, white or black marble, brushed oak or frosted glass. More than half a dozen upholstered and wooden framed dining chairs can be coordinated with the tables.

Select introductions:

Jackson platform bed and nightstand
At only 6 inches high, the Jackson platform bed hugs low to the ground. A natural finish on maple veneers reinforces the simplicity of the style. The nightstand tops out at 20-inches high and 24-inches wide, making a compact statement bedside.

Bar cart
The bar cart, featuring a minimalist frame in a dark bronze finish with glass shelving, occupies a depth of 14 inches. Slightly wider than a ruler, it is sure to fit the snuggest of dining spaces, hallways or even bedsides.

Dorian cabinet
Designed for the bedroom but befitting a hallway or living area, the Dorian cabinet achieves tall storage in a 36-inch-wide by 18-inch-deep footprint. Shaker-like styling, pine veneers and a warm gray finish. Two exterior doors open to one fixed and two adjustable shelves.

Marshall dining table
A compact 42-inch round table seats four, comfortably. Designed with a dark bronze finish, four slender legs and no apron, it’s all about the legroom.

Tatum upholstered arm dining chair
The Tatum proves that concise measurements don’t confine style. Rectangular, wooden tapered legs support a well-pitched, barrel back seat. The interior is upholstered with a tight back while the exterior, upholstered in a complementary tone, features a quilted pattern.
