Bunakara recently announced that it will showcase several new pieces at the Spring High Point Market, running April 14 – 18, 2018. The assortment of Portuguese-inspired case goods, upholstered furniture and home accents feature authentic materials and artistic techniques from Portugal’s rich history.

With the intention to weave the emotions, the history and the knowledge of the past with the present into each design, highlights of the authentic materials being unveiled this Market include chestnut wood, rich bronze details and 19th century tiles from Portuguese palaces. Hand crafted using traditional practices such as antique Portuguese painting methods and traditional European manufacturing techniques, each signature piece is rooted in European design, yet adapted for the U.S. market with special attention to scale, detail, materials and quality.

“When designing for the American market, I always consider both the form and the function of each piece,” said Joana Aranha, founder of Bunakara. “The U.S. is a melting pot of many cultures, which allows me to blend several unique styles into the products I design. In my creations, I aim to reflect the history and backstories of the design inspiration, which helps to evoke a sense of purity and comfort within each piece, always with a special attention to detail, which is the hallmark of our products.”

Highlights of the upholstery introductions include the Bohemian sofa, which is characterized by its casual slipcovered look. Featuring generously-scaled track arms and 100-percent feather seat cushions, the classic silhouette is available in an 89- or 126-inch size, which offers flexibility for smaller living spaces. It is upholstered in a durable straw-tone or navy blue natural linen which is accented with natural leather stitching details along the sofa profile and cushion seams as well as Bunakara’s signature red cross-stitching details on the skirt and back panels. A coordinating ottoman is also available.

Accent items designed to coordinate with the Bohemian sofa include a square accent pillow with handmade leather cross-stitching details and a bolster pillow accented with burlap twine.

Available in a new coral colorway, each features a mix of linen and cotton velvet for textural interest and are finished with a signature bronze button. A Magazine Bag – the first of its kind in the company’s product line – is also available. Reminiscent of the style of a traditional messenger bag, it is designed to hold a variety of reading material, a television remote control and other knick-knacks and is crafted with natural straw-tone linen with natural leather zig-zag stitching details and a burlap twine synch-tie closure.

Featuring antique Portuguese painting techniques and velvet upholstery, the delicately-styled, yet durable silhouette of the Sphere armchair offers a bit of whimsy with two unique finishes: black and white stripes and navy blue. Each luxuriously padded seat is upholstered in cotton velvet to match the hand painted navy blue or black and white stripes of the chair – a signature Bunakara design element. Crafted of chestnut, with its natural wood veins visible, the chair backs are accented with two bronze bands which coordinate with two spherical bronze details that sit atop the front legs. The decorative spheres are engraved with an authentic Portuguese design motif. Like all pieces in Bunakara’s product line, each chair also features the beaded Flower of India insignia, the quintessential adornment to these uncluttered works of art.

Headlining the case goods introductions is the slender Chestnut and Rivets dining table which is crafted with natural chestnut. Using traditional European furniture manufacturing techniques, the wood veins of the table top are carefully positioned to align with bronze rivet detailing, which creates a striking pattern. The patterned top rests upon wooden legs that are finished with decorative bronze feet.
The Pipe and Bronze console table – that pairs well with many of Bunakara’s sofa styles – juxtaposes simple with rare with its natural, unfinished metal legs that are paired with elegant bronze details. The wood top is crafted with chestnut in a deep patina that reveals the clarity and richness of the natural wood.

The final table introduction, 19th Century, is characterized by its authentic top made with blue and white 19th century tiles that were recovered from old Portuguese palaces. Placed in a random design and mixed with traditional gold leaf details, each tile is unique and includes an inscription of authenticity on the back. The premium table top is finished with bronze detailing and rests on bronze metal legs.

This Market, Bunakara is also unveiling a collection of Portuguese-inspired ceramic earthenware, a new product category for the company. The collection of decorative bowls will be presented in a color palette of blues and corals, to coordinate with the featured colorways of the new furniture and textiles on display in the company’s High Point showroom located at SALON G-6055 in the Suites at Market Square.
