In 2005 Sleep Country USA www.sleepcountry.com initiated its foster kids program to focus its resources on this very important cause. Today, the company announced that it has been recognized by the Puget Sound Business Journal and The Seattle Foundation for the impact of its Sleep Country Foster Kids program on this community in need. Sleep Country USA was awarded the title of one of the area’s Top Corporate Philanthropist and Healthy Community Corporate Champion at an awards luncheon on Thursday, May 7.

In its fifth year, the Sleep Country Foster Kids program has donated tens of thousands of key material items, including shoes, coats, clothes, school supplies, pajamas, and gifts during the holidays, to area foster organization partners. Through highly publicized drives that are promoted on television, radio, online, and in print, the company appeals to its community of individuals and businesses that wish to make a difference, providing an easy way to participate by donating requested items at any one of its more than 70 stores.

“We have always been an avid supporter of our community and saw an opportunity to really make a difference for a lot of children in our area,” said Terry Horsley, vice president of brand strategy. “Foster children face challenges that few people can imagine. By giving them what they need to make difficult transitions and fit in with peers a little easier, we’re showing them that they live in a community that cares for them and wants them to succeed. Being recognized for this is incredibly rewarding and we hope will serve as an inspiration to other businesses.”

Today, there are more than 18,000 foster children living in Washington State. These kids may have just escaped neglect, abuse or abandonment and rely on community and state services as they adjust to life in a new home, going to a new school and meeting new friends. Along with the six annual drives, Sleep Country USA holds its annual Pajama Bowl to raise money for foster children, delivering the extra cash needed for kids to attend camp, play a sport, or learn a musical instrument. The company also hosts two days at Wild Waves Theme Park where foster families can enjoy a day of fun at no cost to them.

“It’s our motto at Sleep Country USA that while ‘not everyone can be a foster parent, anyone can help a foster child’, and we’re happy to live it everyday,” closed Horsley.

Currently, the Sleep Country USA Foster Kids program seeks new shoes in all sizes from toddler to adult.
