Industry Study Reports 39.9 Increase In Specialty Sleep Unit Sales

Furniture World News on

Specialty sleep products company Classic Brands reported that its sales reflected the 39.9 percent rise in unit sales for the specialty sleep category at retail in June, as reported by a leading industry trade association. The rise, in specialty mattress sales, they say, "was clearly at the expense of inner-spring bedding which was up 9.8 percent for the same period over a year ago."

The report noted that while the average unit selling price (AUSP) for the period was down by 5.0 percent for inner-spring mattresses, it was only down 1.2-percent for specialty bedding. The report cited a rise in value bedding over higher-price product as the key reason for the AUSP erosion.

“Consumer demand for specialty mattresses and sleep products is very strong. One public company is reporting a 61-percent gain in the period. For a retailer, that should be a wake-up call to look at their product assortment to be sure they are adding specialty sku’s and scaling back some of their inner-spring collection,” said Classic Brands CEO Mike Zippelli.
