Gary Gevurtz, president and owner of Somnia Furniture will be awarded the 1999 Retailer of the Year by the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Gevurtz is being honored not only for his commitment and support to the business community in the greater Philadelphia marketplace, but for his savvy marketing tactics and innovative retail concept. The award not only represents a personal achievement for Gevurtz, but an achievement for the furniture industry as a whole. From a field of virtually 6,000 retailers in the eight county area, the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce chose to bestow this honor to a furniture retailer. With over 60 employees in five stores (Manayunk, Center City, Northeast Philadelphia, Route 309 in Hatfield and Marlton, New Jersey) and a 77,000 square foot warehouse distribution center, Gevurtz has gained a tremendous amount of ground since opening his first store on Walnut Street in 1982. Gevurtz credits his success by knowing his market, having a keen merchandising sense, creating lasting partnerships with vendors and practicing strategically sound and creative marketing. Add to the fact that the Somnia stores offer a great selection of stylish furniture as well as unparalleled value, it is no wonder why Gary Gevurtz will be honored with the Retailer of the Year Award at the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Excellence Awards Ceremony on November 19th.
