Karim Rashid, the prolific industrial designer known for his minimalist yet sensuous aesthetic, will make a personal appearance at LaDifférence International Home Furnishings, 125 S. 14th Street, on Saturday, May 7th from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Rashid’s first appearance in the region, in conjunction with the Magis Road Show event at LaDifférence that weekend, kicks off the LaDiff 25th Anniversary Celebration.
“Design should be engaging, beautiful and part of everyday life,” says Rashid, who finds inspiration everywhere and anywhere. Over 1000 objects in the marketplace, including the Garbo trash can and Oh chair, bear his signature. He’s presently working in 23 countries doing projects ranging from furniture, lighting, products and interiors to fashion, art and music. Rashid’s client list reads like a who’s who of modern design. Magis, Italy; Artemide, Italy; Artbox, USA; BDI, USA; Sony, Japan; Umbra, USA; Toyota, Japan; Georg Jensen, Denmark; George Kovacs, USA; Herman Miller, USA; Natuzzi, Italy; and Davidoff, Switzerland to name but a few. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, and is included in the permanent collections of 14 Museums worldwide. Rashid exhibits his art at Sandra Gering and Deitch Projects in New York. His most recent book, EVOLUTION, was just released.
Rashid earned a bachelor of Industrial Design in Ottowa, Canada and did postgraduate studies in Italy in 1984. He worked at KAN Design in Toronto for 7 years before opening his own studio in New York City. Rashid also designed the recently completed semiramis hotel in Athens and Nooch in New York City. and is working on hotels, restaurants and shops in London, Moscow, New York, Dallas and Turkey.
