IKEA Breaks Ground On New Portland, Oregon Store

IKEA, a leading home furnishings retailer, on Tuesday, July 25, broke ground for its store in Portland, Oregon, increasing its growing presence in the U.S. The new store, adjacent to Portland International Airport, will be the second store in the Pacific Northwest and is expected serve many Oregon and Southwest Washington customers when it opens in Summer 2007. The nearly 19-acre site in Portland will include a 280,000-square foot IKEA store and will employ approximately 350 IKEA coworkers. Located at the southwestern corner of I-205 and Airport Way, the store will have 75 bicycle racks and two light-rail station to provide convenient access for coworkers as well as for customers. In addition to nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, the future IKEA Portland will feature three complete homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children’s play area, as well as a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries or salmon plates, as well as American dishes too. Other family-friendly feature will include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking, and play areas throughout the store.
