Artisan House Co-Founder, Kurt Freiler, Dies

Kurt Freiler, a founding partner of Artisan House, designers and crafters of unique, fine-quality metal sculptures for wall, floor and tabletop, has passed away. He was 103. His death follows the passing of Artisan House’s other co-founder, Jerry Fels, in 2007 at the age of 90.

While Artisan House has experienced great success for nearly 50 years, it all began with Kurt Freiler and Jerry Fels. Soon after they met in the 1940’s, it became apparent the two shared a passion for creative development and design. Freiler, a German immigrant and manufacturing ace with a knack for reinventing the use of tools, and Fels, a New York-based artist, quickly became friends and, soon after, began taking their first steps to securing a successful business future together.

It was in 1964 that the pair officially launched Artisan House, which quickly became known for its collection of eclectic, decorative wall décor. Freiler and Fels are also responsible for the corporate signature of “C. Jeré” that is found on all authentic Artisan House sculptures. The signature has become synonymous with classic designs and fine craftsmanship, and is recognized as the benchmark brand in fine metal wall décor.

Today, the company is largely popular amongst vintage art dealers and collectors, has caught the attention of leading designers, like Michael Payne and Jonathan Adler, and offers its discerning clients an ever-evolving roster of more than 350 pieces.
