Woodard Revives Sculptura Collection

In 1956 Woodard produced an outdoor collection that, by its very design and continued demand, took its rightful place among furniture’s iconic styles—Sculptura. With molded, woven wire as its framework, Sculptura moved outdoor furnishings of the day from uninspired and utilitarian to sleek, modern and technically advanced. When you were draped in a Sculptura chair you became a little cooler, a bit sexier, more the Mad Men version of yourself.
Fast-forward more than a half-century and Sculptura is still in demand. Woodard receives calls weekly from consumers enamored with the collection’s stylish appeal. Some have held on to original Sculptura pieces passed as heirlooms from parent to child. Others have been more recently drawn in by Sculptura’s allure. Either way, the desire is there. Coupled with the technical innovations that make today’s fine outdoor furnishings nearly indestructible and a mid-century modern style resurgence in full blossom, Woodard knew it was time to re-introduce Sculptura’s enduring good looks to the world.
Today’s Sculptura, being unveiled at the 2014 International Casual and Outdoor Furnishings Market, still sports its curvaceous wire mesh arms, back and seat, but with more generous proportions to meet the 21st century ideal of comfort. Edited to four statement pieces—the classic occasional chair, a spring chair, side table, and a stunning two-seat bench—Sculptura demands attention wherever it is used. And, it goes virtually anywhere due to Woodard’s use of high-tech protective finishes that can withstand the un-friendliest weather conditions.
The original made style history even as it was only available in a short list of finishes. Sculptura for 2015 is available in an eye-popping array of more than 30 colors and finishes, dressed with more than 200 outdoor-ready cushion fabric choices, providing endless design possibilities.
