Value of Old Pennsylvania House Set?

Post New Topic

I inherited a solid cherry Pennsylvania House Dining room suit with a drop leaf table, server, large buffet and hutch, along with ladder back cane seated chairs, two captains and four sides. This was purchased in 1957 and I am wondering about the quality or worth of such a set. It seems to be in very good shape but I don't know much about this furniture. What can you tell me about it or where could I get it appraised? Would it devalue it if I have it refinished? It is totally original. Thanks for your feedback.

Did you ever sell your PA House dining furniture, particularly the table? If so, what price did you get for these items?
Thanks,
K.

Hi, I have some older PA House pieces and would take a look at your dining pieces. Can you e-mail photos of the pieces to me ? fdrysand@aol.com

This is probably a good quality mid priced set. I don't know how much it is worth, but there certainly isn't a large or organized market for used furniture. Generally people would rather have a new set and would rather not buy an older (production line) mainstream styled dining room unless they can get it for very little. Refinishing can devalue fine antiques, but I don't think you need to worry about your set. I wouldn't have a 200 year old windsor chair refinished, and I would call Stickley before doing work on one of their vintage pieces. A good appraisal can cost hundreds of dollars, and probably isn't worth the time or effort. You can probably gauge the value by comparing it to similar new sets and discounting the price more than 50% to start... and work down from there.
