I will soon be selling a Temple Stuart dining room set that looks remarkably similar to a popular Heywood Wakefield design. My parents received the set as a wedding gift in 1953, and it has been in our family ever since.

The set includes a two-piece china closet, with original glass, a formica-covered wood table with one leaf, and six chairs, including one arm chair. Each piece has a wheat finish and none has ever been refinished or retouched.

I live in Bethesda, Maryland and am open to questions and offers. I'll also happily send along pictures. Buyers will need to arrange and pay for transportation. If I place the set on consignment with a local dealer, I will modify or remove this note. Thanks a lot.

I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have 3 maple chairs (one with arms) with Temple-Stuart Furniture and Rockport 124 on the bottoms. They're not in very good condition. The armless chairs show a couple of board lines on the seats. Some of the connecting rods under the seat need to be reglued. I read somewhere that they lose their value if you refinish them. I'm willing to sell or listen to advice. I have photos I can send.

Hello!
I agree with Neil, 2/19/2010. Temple Stuart furniture is well made and attractive.
My husband bought me a corner storage table for the dining room. There was another piece he could have picked up, but I didn't think we had room. When I realized what a nice piece it was, and went back to buy it, it was gone.
I'm in Connecticut. Anyone in CT or the Springfield/Worchester MA area have any T-S pieces for sale? If so, please let me know. Thank you!
Wonder who thought of the name Temple Stuart. Maybe someone who knew history. The Knights Templar (Templars) got their name from the Temple in Jerusalem.
They were eventually feared by the European church and state Establishment for their power and wealth. Stuart = Stewart = Steward. Steward - caretaker of mo__ls, money, an estate, etc. Temple Stuart=Temple Steward. Hmm...

From Clayt Stuart, Jr., 2/24/2010  2:10 PM

To Neil:   I was also a rep. for Temple-Stuart in the late 70's. Remember me? Am retired in New Hampshire after many years in Furniture. I have fond memories of you and your family.   ~Clayt

From Neil, 2/19/2010  8:17 PM

I was a manufacturers rep for Temple Stuart from 1963 until the last year in 1987. Although the company was started in Baldwinville MA in 1904, most of the items that are mentioned in the posts are circa 1960 thru 1985. The Pioneer Treasury and Rockingham styles were made of solid birch and were Colonial or Early American styles that unfortunately do not have much demand today. If they were antiques that would change the values but if I had a set today I would keep it . There are no domestic manufacturers today that produce anything near that quality.

My email is n--nd@bellsouth.net. I have the whole Pioneer Trasury dining room set. Anyone have any idea of prices today? Ths stuff was made in America in MA

From Nancy, 1/3/2010  9:24 PM

I have a Temple Stuart Dining room set in the new darker birch called Pioneer Treasury. It had to be special ordered(took 9 months) back in 1977 because they only cut the birchwood once a year. I still have the original book and prices I paid. I have a bubble glass china deck and a no. 1905B credenza 60 x 19" and 58" high. With that I have the tea wagon with wood top. The table is spoonfoot with 2 leaves and extends to 96"with wood top. I have 6 cane back side chairs with the padded seats No. 832. Then I have 2 cane back arm chairs to match. The whole set is more formal than the early American pieces made of maple. It is in perfect condition with no scratches, marks or broken pieces. The darker Rockingham finish lends a rich polished elegance to the mellow warmth and graciousness of this beautiful collection. I treasure it because I have 8 chairs and it was well-made in America, unlike what is available today. We are moving and down sizing and considering selling the whole set together. We also have the square commode table no. 80-2 and the octagonal commode table. All pieces are spotless, no marks or scratches and real wood. We live in Marietta, GA very close to Atlanta. I can email pictures.

I just had my Temple-Stuart Rockingham chairs refinished. They are birch (which is a hardwood), stained with a medium dark color. 831-1071 is on the bottom of the chairs. I purchased them in 1972. The table is round with one leaf that makes it oval in shape. The table top is formica finished. I keep spraying the table top with Pledge to keep it looking good. The chairs are Early American in style, & the spindles on the chairs are beautiful. The chairs are side chairs...no arm chairs. I don't plan on selling unless the price is right.

From Pat, 3/3/2009  12:16 PM

The Carlton collection I believe was taken from product by Sprague and Carlton(Keene N.H.) after T/S bought them out. Their product was good , but never the quality of S/C. S/C was the last company to use solid hard rock maple through out , most likely that quality is what did them in as today's furniture never meets yesterdays standards.

I have a dining set made by temple stuart and can not find another on the net. It is a table, six chairs, buffet and hutch with sliding glass doors. It looks just like heywood wakefield, and is blonde. The chairs look like dogbone style, and have original seat covers in excellent shape. The set itseld needs to be polished or revarnished to look brand new. It is solid and sturdy though, the dining table top looks brand new for it has a formica clear top. I am interested in selling it because its not my style, but have no idea of its value because I can not find one like it. If anyone has info please respond,

I have two Temple Stuart dining room pieces for sale. One is a open hutch top, with lighted cabinets on each upper end. It will fit a 72" buffet. I just listed this on craigslist for $180.

I also have a rectangular 60x42 inch table. There are a few very minor scratches on the top, and the legs show some wear. All in all, it is in good condition, and was covered for many years with table pads. I am asking $200.

These pieces are from the Rockingham collection, solid hard rock maple. They were purchased in 1980. Non-smoking home.

We are located in central Maryland, about 15 miles north or Baltimore.

From John, 12/1/2008  8:15 PM

I have a credenza/hutch which is approx. 40 yrs old handed down to me from my deceased parents. I found the name "Temple/Stuart" on the inside of one of the drawers but the company is apparently out of business. The set was almost destroyed in the Sept. 11th hurricane that hit our home in Houston, Tx. I want to appraise it's value but cannot find anything online to help except this one. Can anyone help me to find a way to get this appraised for the insurance company? Also, I want to have it restored instead of replaced. It didn't have a scratch on it anywhere and is very dear to our family. A large solid wood table and 6 chairs came with the set which was also damaged. Photo's are available. Thank you for any help you can give.

Hello-
Does anyone know...did Temple Stuart make lighted 2 piece china hutches?
I am looking into buying one but want to be sure it isn't a "married" piece.
Did they "signed" each piece of a two piece set? So I can look on the hutch top for the "signature"?
The bottom of this piece has the Temple Stuart stamp on the left side of the left drawer.
Also-- any chance anyone could venture a guess as to a reasonable market value?
Thank you

I'm looking for an armchair for my elderly dad to match a set we have of Temple Stuart colonial maple spindle back chairs. They are stained dark. Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated.

I just bought a Temple Stuart maple hutch at a garage sale - it was very well made, (including dove-tailed drawers), and has all the original hardware, including the velvet silverware drawer. I picked it up for $60 and am refinishing it. I am now interested in the dining room table - anyone have one they want to part with? Leave message on board.

From Russell at Furniture World Magazine, 5/18/2004  3:13 PM

Temple Stuart has been out of business for perhaps 20 years. The were based in Gardner MA and advertised in our publication FURNITURE WORLD for 30 years. They made quality mid priced colonial/country (early American) styled furniture. There really isn't much to know about a dining set from Temple Stuart or for most factory made furniture of the 20th century. There isn't a romantic story behind it's design, construction or marketing. It is another consumer product... Like a TV set from the 1960s or 1970s... except that the dining room is still probably as good as new.
