Russ, Our parents have recently died and we are checking the funiture in the house to try get some information about a couple of maple items. 4 dining table chairs that have S Bent & Brothers Inc of Gardner Mass., Colonial Quality, and they are numbered. The dining table has one leaf and #1358111 and Rock Port Maple. legs different from the chairs 2 bilevel end tables with BaumRitter 263040 or 268040 and the #1531 Colonial style Coffee table one level BaumRitter #1530 and 601-24 B 466 1530. We are "clueless in Oregon". One sister knows Mother aquired them second hand in CA 1965ish. We are not trying to "price them out" just wondered if they had any history that might be interesting. I have an original Colonial S. Bent & Bros dining room Set consisting of 6 chair (S Bent Stamped); 2 chairs with arms rests and 4 chairs with out. The table I believe is a heavy Farm style with fold down leafs done in Dark Wood. Its been in our family for nearly 30 yrs. Pictures will be available this weekend

We just bought a new set and this will be going soon.

We have 4 armchairs And a table the table is not marked just has a number it looks just like the chairs not sure how to find out?table311429 and 99-10-7k rk chairs stamped s.bent & bros gardner mass colonial chair0070081852 and310,2220577852,1040279852 and470,2160678852 and470.The 4 chairs are the same.The sides look like spindles and the 4 back slats curve up and back down on tops, bottoms form design coming out to a point downwards then back up into smooth curve to a point and back across.The arms come out to curve and under arm support connects to sides and under the chair a rod runs acoss the chairs conecting the arms for extra support.Its unusualy pretty and sturdy.The seats have leg and behind impressions made into the wood.We are curious about anything someone knows about these chairs or table.email us at tinalstim@yahoo.com Thanks.

they are in a caramel oak color, they each have a cut out in the top back of the chair (almost looks like a monkey head) and have 6 fairly detailed spindals with the outside spindles thicker. Does anyone have any info on purchasing 2 more chairs for my set?

We have 6 S Bent & Bros dining chairs, armless semi Windsor - style. Stury, solid, and a medium honey color, probably Maple. Stamped/embossed on bottom with company name - some also have the sticker with the name and estab 1867. Sturdy and in great shape. Most likely from the early '50s - have been in one family for years. I have a rocking chair that has S.Bent & Bros., Inc 1867 stamped on the bottom. The entire chair was put together and looks like only 2 wooden screws put in the entire chair. it is very sturdy, the original finish appears to be faded. I have a black captain's chair bearing the University of New Hampshire seal in gold, along with gold trim on the spindles, etc. The arms look like maple and were stained. The number stamped into the underside of the seat are 342 and 1069. It seems that several of the college/university chairs written about on these posts have 342 on them... or maybe that is just a coincidence. How old might the chair be, doesn't anyone know?

We recently purchased a Bent rocker at a local yard sale. The chair is very sturdily made. Metal bracing, bolts, metal rod across the front on the underside, etc. The bottom of the seat had the branded in logo.It has a dark shiny finish and although it matches our dark pine furiture, the grain looks more like ash or polar or some other wood. We're curious to know more about the rocker such as age, value, etc.

GARDNER - An early morning fire yesterday at the former S. Bent &Brothers furniture factory complex was probably arson, the state fire marshal said.

The building, the only one in the sprawling once-famous furniture company believed to be salvageable since the complex was condemned a few years ago, was torn down yesterday afternoon.

The general-alarm fire, in a former furniture sample-making shop at Mill and Winter streets, was reported at 2:41 a.m.

My dad was a salesman for S.Bent for over 30 years, retiring in 1987; in fact, their top saleman for many years. The company was founded in 1867, which is the number burned into the bottom the chair seats. Their address was 85 Winter Street. May dad worked for Gardner Bent, and Ken Johnson was the sales manager.

I have a S Bent Ash dining set purchased new by me in 1988. Due to its size I'm considering selling and going smaller in my new home. The set is in as new condition. The stain is referred to as light 9600. The table is #987 round 48 inches and there are two 12" leaves (never used) that extend the width to 72". It is referred to as a solid ash lions foot table. There are custom pads that have always covered the top. The top is flawless and the whole set is near perfect. I have an S. Bent & Brothers chair with wide flat arm rests which I bought from an antique shop within 1-3 hours of Salem, MA in the mid 1990s and than had a qualified craftsman re-glue. It's tight as can be. I'm considering selling it and am trying to gauge its value. I always thought of it as Mission style, but that might not be accurate.

The paper label reads:

Manufacturers of Chairs and Settees
Station A, Gardner, Mass.
Dovetail Joints Used
On All Wood Seat Chairs.
No. ....... (no number legible)

We are looking for a replacement stave for a S.Bent & Bros. oak rocking chair purchased in 1985. We purchased the rocker before our son was born, and would truly love to pass this along, but have had no luck finding a replacement stave.
We have checked with area Amish woodworkers, and they have not been able to come up with a replacement.
The stamped marking on the bottom of the rocker is:
83 and ?7 as a number
0885

Stave length to be replaced is approximately 24 inches long, and is 1 ¼” wide at the fattest portion. The stave was thrown away many years ago as it was shattered.
Does anybody know of a resource for replacement parts, or someone who is capable of creating a replacement reasonably?

I purchased the most beautiful furniture for three rooms in my home from S. Bent in the 90's. They included a complete dining room; table, 6 side chairs, server. A bedroom set; dresser, mirror, nightstand, armoire and a tall chest w/ awriting desk built in. I also purchased a sofa table and a square cocktail table w/ a curio drawer under glass and 2 smaller drawers beneath. They'er all ash w/ a light natural finish. All of my pieces are beautiful and in excellent condition. Over the years I've received many, many compliments on my furnishings. The only regret I've had was not purchasing the end tables that matched. If anyone is interested in selling a set of end tables or even a single piece please let me know. Thanks!

s bent chairs was a company in gardner conn, that went out of business in 1999 when it was sold to sam bent in 2000. It continued to lay off workers and closed its doors in 2002 when it went into recievership from a bankruptcy.
the factory complex has gone down hill since then and a fire claimed the last building which was torn down a year ago.
the company had a 133 year history making colonial chairs. some of the best in the world. Hand sanded and formed seats.
the company was the victim of lower wages in the carolinas of the us and over seas. Many of the furniture factories in the northeast have since closed as lower production costs off shore have lured the companies away from new england.
a sad end to a great company.

Sometimes furniture has an interesting history. When my grandparents came from Scotland to Nova Scotia around 1911 they bought a set of 4 kitchen chairs which they used in the farmhouse. The label on the bottom said S. Bent & Brothers, established 1867, Manufacturers of Chairs and Settees, Station A, Gardner, Mass. After years on the farm the chairs moved with them to Montreal. The chairs were roughly used, one was smashed and the rest were pretty wobbly. When the old folks died, no one wanted them so as a young man I put them in storage. I guess I'm a packrat! Now I'm 73 and just had the pleasure of repairing and restoring them to give to each of my 3 daughters for Christmas. I even turned one spindle that was broken. I hope they like them.

We also have a S. Brent Brothers rocking chair. I purchased it new for my wife for Christmas in 1979. She was pregnant for our first son. It has lasted thru 2 more kids and a granddaughter. It is extremely comfortable, and still in great shape. The numbers on the bottom are 359,0879,633 burned on the bottom as well as 130 stamped in black. The top piece has a "scroll/star burst" pattern on it. Not sure how else to describe it. It also has a heart cut into the center upright piece. I am sure noone would be willing to pay what it would take to get it away from my wife... The cost would be far greater than its worth.. :)

I have an Ethan Allen solid maple 48" table with 2 leaves that I bought 2nd hand from the original owner about 15 years ago. She told me she had the set since the early-mid 50's. It was used as a formal set, hence only for Thanksgiving/Christmas family gatherings. It has 6 chairs (one of which is a captain's arm.) The chairs Windsor 7-spindle with 2 v-back spindles and saddle seats; top railings of each chair has a deep groove design cut into each corner. Each chair is engraved with S Bent & Sons Colonial Chairs, Gardner, Mass and has the word Nutmeg stamped. Each chair also has a paper sticker with name of company and 1867 with the #1788-5__(1?)4. I also have a matching solid maple hutch and buffet (extremely heavy, 2-piece.)The set is in excellent condition. I would very much appreciate any info you have regarding. I can send photos. I too am from S.Gardner and worked for a short time at S.Bent while in high school. (circa '55 'til I realized I was allergic to sawdust!! LOL. I probably worked for you if you are the Rod Bent I'm thinking of.
You would probably remember me as "Doc"
Is the old catwalk that crossed the street between buildings still there?

I have four Bent Bros high-backed bar stools that swivel. The swivel mechanism on one recently broke and I have not been able to find the right size to replace it. The base plates that mount under the seat (8 in) and on top of the legs (8.75 in) are larger than anything I can find on the internet. There are no markings of any kind on the swivel. I will never forget the first time I sat in my girlfriend's S. Bent rocking chair. It was Amazing!!!Her Mom bought it for her because she was expecting. Several years later she was moving to a smaller place and didn't have room for it, so I (out of the kindness of my heart, of course), offered to babysit for it. It had the place of honor in my living room, and I never sat anywhere else for the year it was my pleasure to have it. I eventually had to part with it (I cried the day it left), and knew that someday I would buy two matching ones for my own home. Now I see that it may never happen with the company out of business (I think I'm gonna cry again)!! If anyone has one that they would part with, the one I'm looking for is the one with the wide, thick, wonderful seat, and in the middle of the spindles on the back is a wide slat that I believe has a heart cutout close to the top. It would make my day, week, month, year... life, to buy one! Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a S.Bent & Bros. Inc. chair with a rounded back but also with 2 extra spindles in the back (looks like for support) I know there is a name for this syle but I can't think of it. It is stamped with the logo and 1867 on the bottom of the seat. It has a mahogany finish. Does 1867 mean the date the company was founded? We are looking to sell a pair of S.Bent & Bros captain chairs.
They have brand logo burned, numbers 1071/1072 and underneath 222. Also each is stamped "PINE50". No date. It's dark finished - dark walnut maybe... Has some scratches, but otherwise both are in a very good condition.

I found a wonderful old "University of Virginia" S. Bent Captain's Chair which was once black and has a great look about it. VERY solid and seems to have been used a great deal by its owner who obviously now has gone on to his reward. It is a sweet old chair, so well made and has a lot of character. Certainly it has been in the Old Dominion for a long time and predates the 1950's reproductions currently sold by the alumni association for big bucks. We Virginians appreciate such things. Hi. Very informative site here. So many people have this furniture and to think I was born and raised just up the street. The S. Bent Bros. factory sits empty and abandoned, succumbing to the elements and is no longer a viable factory. I know personally the last owner (G. Bent himself) as well as a few of the last people who worked in that once glorious shop. I am hoping to help start up some form of a S. Bent Memorial and living online museum, including pattern #'s, years a product was produced, what colors were offered, as well as a cross reference to the different finishes available. Now that I know this forum exists, I will check back more frequently. Sorry to say the state of the factory, but I thought the truth might be better then one hoping the place was still in operation. One of my best friends was son of plant superintendant for over 50 years and had worked there himself for over 20, so I have an inside scoop on many aspects. Cheers.

I have a Bent & Bros. Windsor chair, but have not been able to locate any like it for appraisal purposes. It is a rounded high back with arms, the legs have one side rail each, but there are two rail connectors between the sides, not in the front and back but centered about 5" from the front and back and 5" between the two. Also, under the seat at the tops and between the legs, are plain panels joining the seat bottom to the tops of the legs. The chair is stamped "S. Bent & Bros., Inc 1867 Gardner, Mass. This is in a shield-like logo with the name above, the date in the middle and the location on the bottom, in an old english style script. Any help on an appraisal would be appreciated.

A SHORT HISTORY OF S.BENT & BROS.Founded in Gardner Ma by Samuel Bent in 1867 they were a quality maker of fine rocking chairs. Subsiquentily they broadened their line to include other furniture.. Thereafter until about 50/60 years ago the date 1867 was stamped (branded) on the bottom of the chairs. After the war they began to affix a paper tag with their name and the year 1867. People often think that is the year of manufacture. It is not.Bent closed in the middle 80's but was bought and reopened in the 90's but succombed to the compitition from NC_SC and China. Sad! I have a beautiful maple mans rocker(large seat) available for purchase for $ 160. 00 and a child's rocker hand rubbed for $75.00 Worth double that amount. No shipping. PU only, southern Ct.

We have an S.Bent dining room table/chairs made of ash with an oak stain finish from 1988. The finish on the table has begun to wear and has a hazy look. We know it had a special protective coating on it and we want to try to get the luster back. Any suggestions?

Refinish? We bought our S.Bent & Bros. dining room table and six chairs in 1986. We have 3 leafs that are stored under/in the table. The number on the table is 938-9600. Does anyone know how to refinish it??? It is fading. Also it has a few small dings in it?

My father-in-law recently passed down a children's rocking chair that has a S. Bent Brox logo stamped on the bottom of it. There is a lot of posts on here and I tried to read them all but it's making my head spin. Here's what I can tell you this has been handed down in the family for generations. My wife believes it was her great grandmothers. However, we know for a fact that it was her grandmothers rocking chair which would make it purchased in the 20's at the least. I bought my dining set in the mid 90's. I believe that the table is ash, but am not sure if the chairs are oak or ash. I have 4 side chairs and would love to get 2 arm chairs or two more side chairs in case anyone has these to sell. The numbers on the side chairs are 351 993 113 and are branded with the S. Hi! I was at an estate sale today and came across a mint condition Bent and Bros. dining room set. I was told the set was solid oak, but judging from everyone else's comments, it appears that it is only ash stained in oak color. Does it make a big difference in value if it is ash and not oak? Anyhow, it has 6 chairs, 2 leaves, hutch and buffet. I have agreed to pay 1100.00 Does this sound reasonable for the set? I have to make the final deposit and arrange for pick up this week.

I have a matching pair of childs rocking chairs with stenciled backs. S.Bent & Brothers, Gardner, MA Colonial Chairs is embossed on the bottom of each. The stencil is a fruit bowl with leaves. There are seven spindles. I was told that S. Bent & Brothers manufactured good quality early American style furniture but went out of business (or were acquired by someone else)in 2000.

I have a set of 4 S Bent & Sons Ladder Back chairs for sale. The number stamp on the bottom says 731 / 6774.
They are dark walnut stain. These are the "Most butt hugging, Back supporting" wooden chairs you will sit in. One can sit in them for a long time and you don't end up with a back ache. You don't feel like there is a hole in the middle where there is no back support and you are about to slide out of the seat.

I purchased new in the mid 1970's. They are in above average condition and all backs and legs are tight. If interested, send me your e-mail address & I will send you pictures. Thanks

also has paper tag with Nichols & Stone name and date of 1857..Home of Windsor chairs.
Chair has windsor back with 5 spindles and a foot rest only a few inches below chair bottom.
Chair is 37 1/2" tall overall.
chair bottom is about 22" from floor.

I have a S. Bent & Bros maple table with 3-leaves and chairs. The table has 4 legs with curved feet. The table has 6 chairs, 4 regular and 2 captains chairs. They all have the curved top supported by 2 spindles, and the backs on the 4 regular chairs have 9 total spindles (7 smooth in the center, with a turned spindle on each end). The color is golden maple. The 4 regular chairs have #1788-5 on the bottom. The 2 captain's chairs have 7 smooth spindles on the back, 2 smooth and 1 turned short spindles on each underneath side of the arm rest. The number on the captain's chairs are faded, but the number could possibly be #1790. The table has normal scratches, wear, and dings from the 30 years I have owned them, and I bought this set used. I am not sure of the total age of this set.

Oh, by the way, this set is looking for a new home. I also have a matching china cabinet with glass door hutch that may become available in the future. Please email me (rparks8690@gmail.com) with any questions or picture requests.

I have four S. Bent chairs that I bought from Brown University in 1971 when I was moving to the University of California, Santa Cruz. They had been in Rhode Island Hall when I first started teaching there in 1959, but were replaced soon after with ugly “functional” plastic chairs. I discovered that they had been put in storage and I was able to buy them at $5 apiece. (Imagine!)
When I came to California I only refinished three of them. The fourth ended up in my garage work shop where recently I decided to finally refinish it as well and noticed the S. Bent paper label on the bottom.
These chairs required no mending – then in 1971 or now. Just some paint-stripping, sanding, and spar varnish. They are very solid and have worn well. They blend beautifully with some other “farm antiques” I also rescued from New England. I can send photos to anyone who thinks they can identify year/era of manufacture.
My interest is plain curiosity. I have no intention of selling these babies. Rather they will go to my grandchildren — one for each, unless my youngest son, who expects to have children of his own, objects furiously. And by the way, years ago I saw a picture of Thomas Edison’s laboratory in N.J. (ca. early 1900s) and it was furnished with these same chairs!

I have a S Bent & Bros high-back rocking chair in a medium wood stain (original). "S Bent & Bros; Gardner, Mass; Colonial Chairs" is burned into the underside of the seat. It has a painted eagle with "1776-1976" painted on the top of the chair. It is in great shape! Does anyone have any information as to the value of this piece? I have an S. Bent and Brother's stool. It is 36 inches high. Has a brand burned into it S. Bent and Brothers Gardner Mass. and also the paper lable. It has never been used untill I bought it in in antique shop atic about 30 years ago in Cheshire Ct. The shop's atic had many other antques that were still original boxes from the 1800's. I was told by the very old women that is was made to be a dentist stool. I bought it for $18.00.

I Hope you are still looking at these posts!
I have four dining room chairs that came with a cottage I bourght in Maine in 1972. They appeared to be old then.

The curved back, that has a design with leaves and 3 trumpet flowers in the center (morning glory like), is supported by a large turned spindle on each side and 7 other turned spindles in the center. each of the side spindles is supported with a curved angle piece to the seat. The under part of the chair has three turned spindls in the front and two straight (not turned) on each side and back. They have a rather dark varnish finish, original I believe.

On the bottom of two of the chairs are partial paper labels identifying the chairs as being made by S. Bent & Brothers. No other identification.

Can you tell me anything about these chairs. When made, catalog number, name (if any)

Hi Dan,

I would love to find out about my S. Bent rocker. I bought it at a yard sale about 4 years about for $15-$20 (I forget how much exactly). I love it. It is one of the most comfortable chairs in the house. It is the black rocking chair with gold detail painting on the spindals under the arms and on the legs and it has an eagle stencil/decal on it. The seat is pretty wide. It is in great condition structurally. Some of the paint is chipped though and part of the eagle has worn off (a small part of the eagle where his talons would be). It has a paper sticker that is off white with gray printing on it (only half of it is still there) and it has an engraved/burned mark as well. I have two S. Bent Maple rockers, these are the perfect rocking chairs. great for sitting and rocking. my brother in-law loves them too. and would like to find one like these. they have stamped (brandend) logos on the bottoms, # 533 0270 plus the company name and address.

I too have a Bent & Bros. Rocking chair. It's a high back with flowered stenciled out disgn on the upper back, with gold detailing. On the bottom of the rocker it has a # 4 in the center and on the side it has a # 533 and right under it 117. All the numbers are burnt in the wood. I would like to know old this peice is and the value, I am not going to sell it, I just want to know.

Hello Dan, thank you for posting. You might consider - if its feasible - of collecting together the actual sales catalouges of the furniture lines as far back as you can.... condense and improve and digitally enhance if need be... include construction and identification .. turn this law suit into a legacy - as quality furniture of american colonial designs it will remain appealing to collectors - and in a generation or two not so plentiful.....
A published field guide essentially - a final contribution and opportunity to be remebered for centuries!

I have 6 Windsor style chairs (261 Duxbury), oval dining table (60 inches long with 2 leaves), china hutch (52 " wide) and a tea wagon. They are marked S. Bent & Bros. , Gardner, MA on the bottom of the chairs. We purchased these in approximately 1973 in St. Albans, VT and have loved them throughout the years. Unfortunately, we need to sell them to make room for an antique dining set we just inherited. Please contact me and I'll sent photos of the pieces. I know you will enjoy them as much as we have.

HI! Amazing how many of us have the Bent Bros. furniture! I am a CT yankee who LOVES older types of furniture, so imagine my surprise, when, as a bus driver, in a ritzy area of CT, I saw a lady putting a lovely antique rocker to the curb! She said she didn't want it anymore, and was leaving it for the TRASH MAN! I saved it and it sits in my living room now. I found the bent bros logo burned into the bottom of the wood, and although I see no other markings or numbers, I truly believe this is an older rocker, since the rocker legs are slotted onto the "rocker", and it is a Very high back with wooden "pins" slotted from the back of the headrest into the spindles. It is VERY comfy, and Very well made! Hats off to the Bent Bros, and the Lucky day I found one for Free!!

Hi Dan Bent! Thanks for volunteering your time and expertise...my chair is a colonial chair. branded with the #'s 342 the 0870 underneath it. on the upper part of the underside of the seat the is a # 4. It is very dark stain, and it has gold leaf details on the spindles of the legs and the back rest of the chair amd arm rests. it also has a gold "crest" type thing on the back top of the back rest..it has CASE on the crest and i am assuming it is from Case University. Any info would be extrememly helpful in solving this mystery. Thank you!

I have 4 maple chairs with Bent & Bros Inc 1867 stamped. There is still part of one yellow paper sticker with the number 1824. The chairs have 4 spindles and 1/2 up the back is curved with a slat attaching to the spindles and another at the top. Does anyone know the date of mfg or interested to purchase?

I recentely moved back to my home town in Vermont after being gone for about 20 years off and on . I bought a 3 piece set of what i was told to be Ethan Allen furn. A 2 peice hutch, a ladderback chair w/arms and cane bottom and a long bench w/ arms. They are black w/ gold flower. I never questioned it or researched it until now and see that there is stamp or engraving on bottom of bench that says colonial s.bent & Bros. 5 and then the numbers on opposite end that say 4611 directly under numbers is 59. Dont know much bout furniture, i was homesick for Vt and proud to have something from Ethan Allen. Im looking for pics and some info. Havent looked for the numbers on the other pieces yet. At the risk of inviting more inquiries than I can possibly reply to, allow me to comment.
S.Bent & Bros. of Gardner Mass. was a manufacturer of fine furniture, mostly in the clonial style. The company was founded in 1850 by Samuel Bent. It was incorporated in 1867. The company remained in the Bent family until my -ather was forced to sell in the late 1990's. I was raised in Gardner, and worked at the company in the early 1980's. I know quite a bit about the history of the company, and the family. I will hapily respond to questions about the company, or specific pieces of furniture. When inquiring about specific pieces of furniture, it is most helpful to have the numbers, and any other information from beneath the seat of chairs, or the underside of tables. Photos are also helpful.

We bought a Bent Bros ash rocker for my wife around 1980 for our first baby. Want to purchase another. Numbers on the bottom are burned into it are 400 1180 633. The back of the chair has the normal slats but the middle one has a heart cut into it up close to the top. No other chair in the world will do. Would love to purchase at least one maybe two. I have a child's musical rocking chair given to me by my grand-ather in the late 60's/early70's in South Burlington, VT. My boyfriend is in the process of restoring it for me. I don't know the manufacturer and the chair was in such poor shape that it barely still had the stencil on the back rest, let alone any stamps or manufacturer's numbering on it. I'm not interested in selling it because the sentimental value makes it priceless. What I *am* interested in is where (or if) I might find a replacement music box that used to be on one of the rockers? It would play part of a tune (I think it was "Rock a Bye Baby") every time you rocked back. If anyone has any information for me on this, I would be most grateful to hear from you. I have a maple or oak S Bent Dining room set with a table , 2 leaves, and 6 chairs, 2 arm and 4 side. The chair has 4000 stamped on the bottom with S737 (date)12 98 (chair#?) 101.

I am looking for someone to repair the chairs. The above chair is has a broken bottom spindle. The other chairs need re-gluing.

We need to buy two S Bent side chairs to match the ones we now have.

Ours are branded on the bottom of the seat with a logo which contains the following: Colonial Chairs, S Bent Bros., Gardner, M-ssachusetts, 261 1168, Antique 30.

Our chairs are solid hard rock maple. The backs consist of the following: a curved top piece supported by two sets of spindles. The first set is a row of 7 smooth spindles with one turned spindle on each end of the row, making nine total. The second set consists of two smooth spindles set at an agle to brace the front row and top board. All of the underpinnings (rungs, runners, braces, whatever) are turned spindles.

Joyce the chairs are made of maple or ash(solid hardwood} and stained in a maple color. The side chairs have turned legs and leg braces with 4 vertical slats inside of two turned vertical members making up the back of each chair. I was just doing research about a dining set I am selling. I've got an S.Bent dining set from 1958. Maple, not sure of the finish though I can look. Four colonial captain's chairs with carved "scroll" at corners, two side chairs, table with two leaves, and a hutch. In good shape, though the set shows the sign of loving use by my family since 1958. I am in Oregon, so you would have to have it shipped to you. I am asking $1200 for the set.

What a disappointment! S. bent is out of business. I purchased the dark colonial rocker w/gold trim, etc. #0575, 833P in 1975 to rock my god-daughter in. I paid $149 (store closing - orig price $249)Since I had worked in a Colonial furniture store, I knew that was a legitimate price, and also knew that I had never sat in such a comfortable rocker in my life. She had her first child this year and I sent her the rocker. I figured that, even if I paid a bit more, I would buy another one soon. Guess not.
I raised four sons and that chair was used by all, yet it was as beautiful when I sent it, as when I bought it. Keep yours, enjoy, and pass it on.

I just inherited my grandmothers S.Bent Bros. Maple dining room set, with two leaves, and six chairs. One coffee table, three end tables and a buffet hutch. All branded S. Bent Bros. colonial 122. They also have stickers. I don't know what the set is worth, but they are beautiful, and fabulously crafted. People, do not sell your furniture, pass it done to friends and family! This furniture is all so well done it's heirloom quality, and tho is may not bring hefty "antique" value prices now, this furniture was built to stand the test of time and since the company went out of business in 2000, there will be NO MORE! So cherish it and a few generations from now will have something REALLY special. If you must sell your pieces, your best bet is to go to a VERY FINE new furniture store and price your pieces accorrding to what they would cost to buy such a well made solid maple piece new. I think you will be happy with that amount. Also give the buyer the information about the company so they know they are buying the finest quality built furniture that can no longer be bought new and is now destined to continue to go up in value as time goes on. I think you will find it an easy sale. The tricky part is finding some one who still likes that style AND has the money to back it up. Good luck to all! As a final foot note...mine is not for sale, it's also not my style so I will keep one piece for sentimental purposes, and the rest will be past on to others that will do the same, because it was a gift from me.

I am selling my parent-in-laws Bent & Brothers dining room table set. The table originally had 2 leafs, however we only have one. We have the table, 1 leaf and 3 side chairs, 1 arm chair. All have arms just one is really large compared to the other three. The set is in pretty good condition a little banged up from all the moves. Have picks. The table and chairs are very heavy and made from very thick wood. The table and chairs are from 1965 purchased in Maine furniture hardware store in smalltown. Has the brand burned into the bottom of the chairs. Can anyone tell me what the set may be worth.

i have a windsor style wooden adult sized potty chair. it was given to my granny to use when she was passing away from cancer, then passed down to my mother, and now i will be passing it down to my granddaughter. i can't find any like it anywhere online. it looks like an old windsor chair with a faded pin striping of yellow that is worn and a box under which unlatches to take the "pot" out. i would love to know more about it.

I found a sturdy little S.Bent windsor-style chair at a thrift shop. Label is burned in, was perhaps maple finish but the seat has a minor crack. What can be done to protect the wood without messing with the "originality"? The finish is pretty much gone on the seat. If the value is not too much, I would like to have it redone. Have a Cherry dining room table with 6 chairs including a large cherry hutch. The chairs carry the branded S. Bent & Bros. logo. I figure the set was one of the last manufactured by S. Bent before they went out of business in 2000. In fact the unarmed side chairs carry a sticker that says 262-2000-40 and the armed end chairs carry the sticker 262-2000-40. It is a beautiful set with the table having 4 leaves which makes it fit our dining room area perfectly. Great for large family gatherings. According to the message board, Bent Brothers started using paper labels in the early 1900's. If I have a rocking chair made by S. Bent with the company name burned into the wood it is from the turn of the century? The chair seems to be in too good of shape to be that old. Also, it was painted black, then painted white. I found the logo while stripping the old paint off the chair. Does anybody know if the wood is high enough quality that it is worth completely sanding down and staining? Thanks fo rthe feedback.

I have a dining set. I do not know if the table is Bent, but the 4 chairs are. they have the branded stamp. the best way I can describe them are two tier back, the lower tier has two outside ornate turned poles, 7 tapered between, the second tier has 5 standard round poles and behind it all are two tapered to standard poles going the same height as the two teirs. besides the s. bent and Bros brand, there is a number brand as follows:

I have a Bent Bros. (Gardner, Mass) Rocker that is in great condition and solid wood. The date on the under side says 1867 though it was most likley made in the 1950's. The chair was a gift from my Grandparents to my Great Grandfather. My Great Grandfather wrote his name and "Christmass 1955" on the underside of the chair. They all lived in New York City at the time. The chair has moved from NY-NY, Long Island - NY, Towson - MD, Gaithersburg - MD, Frederick - MD, Emmitsburg - MD, and now lives in Gettysburg - PA with us. Very nice chair.

I have an Early American Maple dining room set made by Bent & company 1867. The manufacturer info is stamped on each piece in black ink. The set includes a very large drop leaf table with 2 extra leafs, 2 spindle back armchairs, 4 spindle back straight chairs, and a china hutch. I bought the set used in 1968. The furnature is unbelievable durable and seems virtually indestructible. It is all in great condition. I need to sell them, but have no idea of their worth or how to find a buyer.

We are looking to sell our S. Bent & Bros rocking chair. Marked on the bottom of ours are the numbers 1076 and under it 833P. It also says Colonial Chairs and Gardner, Mass on it, and a hand-carved number "F0625108" also on it. I'm guessing it is ash wood or maple. It is early american style. I have pictures in case anyone is interested.

It was a gift and the elderly couple who gave it to us had it in their home prior, but I have no idea of the age or value - would love to get some feedback on that.

A response also to Tom Steele - we are members of the First Unitarian Church of San Diego - it was funny to see your mention of the same church in Clinton.

We have a large, high-backed rocking chair, dark walnut colored, with S. Bent & Bros stamped underneath. I think it was originally purchased in the early 1970's. The numbers stamped are not 1867, as with the above mentioned furniture. There are two rows of numbers stamped under the seat; the top row "0472", and the bottom row "833". I am not interested in selling it, however I am curious about the significance of the numbers. It also has gold flowered disigns stenciled on upper back and some other gold detailing.

Does anybody have a dollar value on a a rocking chair made by S. Bent Bros. Inc., Gardner, Mass. with the date 1867 engraved on the bottom side of the seat? I'm told they were mass produced, and have little value. However, anything 140 years old must have "some" dooar value.Any ideas?

I bought a child's rocking chair at an estate sale. It is branded on the bottom with one full stamp with S. Bent & Bros. Gardner Mass. under the name and Colonial on top and Chairs on the bottom. Also the branded stamp numbers 327 and 970 are under there too. The stamp seems pretty fancy and the lettering old. Just wanted to know about how old it is.

I just purchased an S Bent & Bros chair. It has 6 "spindles" in the front and 2 behind and a curved back. It has the "brand" burned into the bottom of the chair that says S Bent & Bros, 1867, Gardner, Mass. It has been painted red and I would like to refinish it in its orginal wood color. Would the wood used in the chairs be of a quality that would be suitable for staining? Also, on the bottom of each chair leg there is a small metal "ball" that fits inside of a circular metal holder. The holder rotates around the metal ball. Does anyone know what this is for? I have never seen anything like it before. Thank you.

Isn't it amazing...all this S. Bent & Bros. furniture all over the U.S. turning into the common bond for us all! I have 3 bow-back Hitch(deleted) chairs purchased from an auction in Leominster, MA. The chairs belonged to the First Unitarian Church in Clinton, MA and were used in the Minister's Study. I don't know the purchase or manufacturing date. I do know they were in the church in the early 1900's as my grandparents, parents were members an provided me with the info.The church was built in 1864.

Boy its nice to hear people asking about the Samuel Bent furniture. Yes, they are out of business which is a shame. Gardner MA use to be a large furniture mfg area but not any more. I drive by the old Samuel Bent factory alot and it makes me sick to see it falling down and abandon.

I have just come to own 2 matching Windsor arm chairs w/ reinforcing metal rods. Both branded S.Bent & Bros. Gardner,Mass. 1867 on underside of seats. they have both been painted--one white,one brown,but can be restored.

I bought a wooden side table from a flea market. There is a company stamp branded into the bottom that reads "Geo. Bent Co. Inc. Gardner, Mass. Est. 1932" The number 662 is also branded under the table. Was Geo. Bent related to Samuel Bent of Gardner, Mass? It's hard to think otherwise!! Any and all other information surrounding this piece is welcomed!

Sorry for the spelling in the previous posting as I was distracted by some customers. Alot of people ask about value. Well I have good news and I have bad news. Good news...The high back rocker was one of the original chairs built by Bent. The black rocker discussed earlier with gold trim and stenciling is worth $50 up to $500 depending upon condition. The bad news.....there is no real antique value to the furniture as it was mass produced in a factory and has many duplicates. The good news....I own a custom furniture business and have worked on many Bent Bros. chairs and tables. I have never repaired one that was from a manufacturer flaw it has always been misuse by the owner. What I am saying is enjoy the furniture as it was well built with quality materials and excellent craftsmanship and with proper care can be handed down to many generations to come.

I have noticed alot of people inquiring about furniture they have from the manufacturer S. Bent & Brothers. There has been numerous false beleifs and writing about the company and maybe this will clear up the confusion. Samuel Bentformed the company in 1867 thus why all of the furniture built by the company has this number on it. The original furniture in the 1800's until the early 1900's was identified by "branding" burning a logo into the wood. When printing on paper became easier in the 1900's stickers were affixed to the furniture. The sticker's all had S.Bent & Bros. since 1867 Colonial chairs of quality. The only way to tell how old the furniture is would be by time period information. Meaning speaking with people from that era. I own one of those beautiful black high back rockers with the gold trim and design on the high back. It was handed down to me through family and was purchased in Grand Rapids, MI in the 1930's. And by the way to clear up misinformation from another forum, S. Bent does not stand for "steam bent" it stands for Samual Bent, the founder of the company. S. Bent & Bros. built an extremely large amount of furniture until the company was purchased in 2001. I am unsure of the name of the new owners but they still operate out of the same factory in Gardner, Ma. S. Bent went out of business because of a law suit that was filed on behalf of his workers for unfair labor practices.

I just discovered I have a bentwood - S. Bent & Bros. wooden dining chair I recieved from a neighbor in Chicago when I was 12 yrs old (32 yrs ago). It has 11 total spokes across the back - 9 across the bottom portion of which 4 stop short at the nubby arm rests (2 on each side). The remaining 7 continue to the top plus 2 are behind the 9 that also go to the top. It has the stamp in the wood with "1867". It also has a slightly worn paper label indicating "S. Bent & Bros. since 1867 Colonial Chairs of Quality Gardner Massachussets". THE KEY WORD IS "SINCE" 1867, therefore indicating how long they were in businesss, and not a manufacturing date.
That also explains why there are so many with that date!

I have what appears to be a vintage Bent & Bros chair that, like the above, lists the year 1867. The chair looks more like Mahogony than Oak stained & given the actual design of the chair, it appears quite antique. I am trying to find out the value of this chair & will soon have a pic to email so a date & value can be attributed to this wonderful chair.I know that it has been in the family since the mid 60's and, from what I understand, was around long before that, albiet no date is known.

I also found a rocker at a yard sale that says S. Bent & Bros., Inc. 1867 on the bottom of the rocker. I don't know much about it but would like to know approx. how old it is. I didn't take 1867 as the date but maybe the stock number. The chair is in mint condition that's why I didn't think it was too old. Thank you for your help. It's a beautiful rocker.

I have a rocking chair made by S. Bent Bros. Inc., Gardner, Mass. with the number 1867 engraved on the bottom side of the seat. There is also a stamp that says "nutmeg". I am assuming the 1867 is a date, but I do not see any other numbers.

I have an s bent table and chairs that is made of ash but looks like oak . The finish is worn off the table and needs to be restained. The legs and backs of the chairs are either painted or stained a vanilla creme color. I was wondering if there is a way I can find out how to get the stain color and also the vanilla paint color to make repairs.

S. Bent Brothers located in Gardner, MA. went out of business about 2000. Their furniture was manufactured with high quality workmanship and materials. Many pieces were made of ash wood and stained with an oak finish so often their wood was mistakenly identified as oak. We have a set made by the same manufacturer. We tried to aqcuire a set of 6 additional chairs off e-bay. We won the bid for 126.00 w/us paying shipping charges. The seller didnt like what he got for the chairs and cancelled the transaction. That leaves us still looking for some chairs. S. Bent was an advertiser of ours in the 1960s and 70s. They made good quality colonial (early american)styled furniture. I don't have a readily accessible history of the company, but my recollection is that they went out of business about 5 years ago after a brief restructuring as Samuel Bent.
