Need Info On Lane cedar chest

Post New Topic

My wife and I are in posession of a Lane cedar chest with a half sun design on the front. The top has a push button locking mechanism. The chest belonged to her Grandmother. The following was burned into the bottom at time of manufacture: Style 441628 Serial 248201 Can someone please Identify the year & place of manufacture? The chest has some water damage to the top and some dings on the edges. An approximate value would be welcomed as well! Thanx

Roland,
I have a Lane Cedar Chest, Style NU2404-23, Serial NO 2075170.  I believe you wanted information concerning this chest.  I have the same chest and I am also trying to find information about it.  I like the dark color and the four carved sections on the front and the vinyl/leather seat on top.  Does this remind you of your chest?

From Roland Cota, 8/9/2011  5:57 PM

found out from the website of lane the chest serial # read backwards is the date of manufacture ex.055111 would be nov.15 1950 if it has 7 #s the first # is the plant it was made at but last 6#s is still read backwards

From Roland Cota, 8/6/2011  5:19 PM

From Paige, 10/30/2010  3:22 PM

I can't tell you what its' worth but everyone trying to figure out how old there's is just look at the serial number backwards. For example: serial number 753150 would have been produced on 05/13/57. If your serial number has an extra number like in your case Kelly, your serial number is 2275130 then it was produced on March 15, 1972 at plant #2. Hope that helps somebody.

your chest was made on Oct. 28th, 1942 (serial number backwards) in Alta Vista, VA.

From nicole, 3/21/2010  3:07 PM

I just got a chest...found the following:

if you have a 6 digit serial #, read it backwards for the manufacturing date. for example, my serial is 540904. From what they tell me, it is 04/09/1954.

If your has 7 digits: the first digit (the 7th) is the plant # from where it was manufactured.

So, for example: serial 2540904 means manf date: 04/09/1954 manufactured in plant #2

From sal, 3/8/2010  7:15 PM

i have a lane ceder chest style 197450 serial 564220 would like to know more about it

From Dru, 3/4/2010  5:30 PM

If the chest was made after 1987 (serial no. backwards is the manufacture date) Contact:
Lane Furniture Industries
Customer Service-Lock Division
PH 662-566-3728
Fax# 662-566-3528
Toll Free 877-405-3745

If the chest was made - 1912 through 1987 - you need a replacement lock too. Contact the same address above.

From Dru, 3/4/2010  5:20 PM

The serial number is the date of manufacture backwards so your chest #248201 was made on Jan. 28th, 1942.

I have a Lane cedar chest stamped Alta Vista, Va. I paid $100 at a thrift store , after looking for one for 20 years. Seems people don't part with them very often, I know I won't ever sell or give mine away. It has a style # of 43522, but I can't find a serial number on it anywhere. It is solid wood and in great shape, and still has the Moth Killer paper stapled to the inside of the lid. Any ideas how to find out what the serial number is? Thanks .

I have an old cedar chest....at least 65 years old....it was my Mom's. I thought it may be a Lane or Cavalier but there are no markings to indicate that. There is a pullout drawer near the bottom of the chest (in the middle)with the following: 3711-45 Tray Factory 768. The only paper in it has: This chest is eqipped with New Style Removable Lifting Tray. All the hinges and locks are made of brass. Does anyone have an idea of who could have manufactured this?

Thanks

I find it humorous that so may people want to know the value of something that obviously has to be seen to even be close on value. The value of a lane cedar chest (like much furniture) depends on the rarity of that partiuclar model and year of chest and the current demand for it as well as the condition. Most of the chests listed are worth around 2 or 3 hundred dollars, assuming good condition. Damaged veneer? cut that in half. A few older chests may be worth more, but none are going to be your ticket to retirement. New lane chests run around $700, so these are not going to have a huge antique value, in fact, you can see that a brand new one is more costly than a used one.

That being said, some of the very early chests and very rare chests and very beautiful chests may be worth quite a bit more, but usually not work appraising. Put your linen in it. If you run out of money sell your car instead!

I bought a Lane Cedar Chest from an elderly lady over 20 years ago, who claimed it belonged to her mother; and I would like to know the date of manufacture, please.

The Style number is: 48345X.
The Serial number is: 100731.

Inside the lid is stamped:
LANE - Alta Vista VA

Features Of This Chest Covered By Patent Numbers
1756746 -- 1759401 -- 1759402
Other U.S. and Foreign Patents Pending

It also has the Aroma Test Plug inside of it.
It does not have a tray; and I don't know if it had one originally.

Thanking you in advance. The quality of 'Lane' products still remain as good as ever, although the cedar chests have really shrunk in size!!! I would gladly buy LANE products anyday!

Thanks so much and a very Merry Christmas to you and your staff!!!
Sincerely Satisfied,
Lois J Fornash

Outside has alittle peeling of the wood around the base but in decent shape for the most part. Does anyone know if this chest has much value? Its about 5 or 6 feet long and rather large. Thanks, Daniel

RE: Gloria. I believe your chest was made on October 3, 1947. Simply reverse the order of the serial number for many mid-century Lane chests. Value depends on appraisal or what someone will actually pay at auction.

my mom just bought me a lane cedar chest, and she has NO IDEA how old it might be. we tried to research it online, and discovered the cute little trick of the backwards numer and such, but the serial number is seven digits long 2185150.

even if we dropp the first number, that still means that it was either made in 1918, or 1950... but it has a patent on it that dates to 1984.

any ideas? we just would like to know an approximate age.

My parents purchased my hope chest for me when I was 16. It is one of my most prized possessions. I asked for it for a Christmas present, not because I wanted to get married, but because i know that it would be a way to create memories. I just wondered if you had instructions on how to replace the fabric on top. My sis-n-law burned with an iron a few years back and I would like to replace. For those of you who have questions about the value of your lane hope chest read this:
Monthly cost of internet to find information on your Land Cedar hope chest $45.00
Cost for polish to shine it $2.95

In response to lindaj--I have a Lane cedar chest that has the same patent nos. and a very similar style #. It also has very ornate scroll carvings in the center rectangle and 2 fake scroll handles on either side of this center. Look underneath to find the serial no. Mine is 012532--I am guessing that this means Jan.25,1932 since this would coincide with my grandparents wedding date that was written on the inside of the chest by my grandmother.(April 1932) I do not know its worth, but I'd be interested.

From Doreen, 1/26/2009  7:51 PM

I have two Lane cedar chests from the 60's. I am restoring one of them, but don't have a picture to show what kind of knobs were originally on the front. Calling the Lane phone number was not helpful as they say once the company relocated to Mississippi, no old catalogues were sent along. Can anyone help to locate any old photos. I found a few pictures from posts on Ebay, but none are the same chest. The style number is 6019-50 and the serial number is 362160, which I believe means it was manufactured on June 12th, 1963. I have a Lane cedar chest that my mother purchased new in 1945-6. It has approx. 5-7 lines of patent numbers applied for, burned on the inside lid. The chest is in excellent condition & has it's original varnish finish (over Maple, or is the entire chest Cedar?)The raised wood picture on the lower part of the chest is sort of 4 large connected scallops with an old spinning wheel inside the scallops. The lock is original (unsafe) button lock. Would stripping the varnish down to natural wood & putting polyurethane on, affect the value? Does replacing the lock with a new safety lock from Lane, alter it's value? Any information & value would be appreciated. Thanks!

They also reversed my serial number for the date. It was definately bought in 59 and not 95.

        Serial Number:    932221

there is also a "Identification tag" stapled to the bottom which lists the owner as Bishop Furniture company, Grand Rapids, Michigan dated 3/10/41

Does anybody know the value of this trunk?

Thank you

I'm not seeing anyone get an answer regarding value. Does anyone know how to get one? I too have a cedar/veneer chest with a serial number burnt on the bottom.

From rebecca, 8/25/2007  4:57 PM

Try looking underneath the cedar chest for a spare key. Often the flat key is stapled underneath as an extra.

I am trying to help my 95 yr old grandmother get her cedar chest open. She says it is a Lane but I can not find a serial # on it. It has a small silver push button locking system and she lost the key several years ago when we had all those hurricanes here in FL. The key type would have to be really thin (like a metal nail file). If anyone has any info on where and how I could aquire a key please e-mail me at KCampagnoneBrown@aol.com. Also where are serial #'s located? Thanks,
Karin

I have just recieved a Lane Cedar Chest Style # 02208
Serial #840310   There is an insurance warrenty card void as of July 1949 On the front is an applique spinning wheel.

.....Can anyone tell me the origins and history of this model? A price value would also be appreciated.

I have read that the Lane company will replace the lock mechanism. aside from that change it is in natural condition with a minimum of wear and tear.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed a bit of insight into the journey this chest has taken over the past 50 odd years...

Kathleen

I emailed the Lane furniture site and got a quick reply. The serial number on my box is 031927 and they said it was made on 3-19-1927 so apparently the backwards method does not apply to the older boxes.

From Jo, 6/23/2007  8:08 PM

I too have a Lane cedar chest serial no. 102430 which doesn't make sense using the reverse method for the date. Could it posssibly be October 24, 1930 and the numbers were not reversed during the earlier years? Does anyone know? How do I contact Lane directly as some of you have suggested. Web site doesn't seem to reply and what is a phone number? Thanks, Jo

Hi, I just got a lane cedar chest at a garage sale today. The style is #2133 serial number is 641011. So, am I correct in using the formula above that it is 11/01/46? The previous owner has stripped it almost completely down to the natural wood, I'm guessing that that would diminish it's value but I don't know how much, any ideas on the value if it had the original overlay? Also the top drawer/shelf inside is broken, any way to get a replacement?? Thanks so much. What a fun site!!

Please help. Someone tryed to get into my Lane cedar chest and broke the locking mechanism. I have called locksmiths and they will not touch it, saying they would almost have to destroy the chest , in order to get it open. This chest is very old , with the original lock still in use before it was broken. I have the original Lane key. It will only go halfway into the lock. Please tell me how to get into my cedar chest.

I have a cedar chest with a lot of inlay on the front in a deamond design. It has a drawer on the bottom, scroll work on the sides. Solid wood, no veneer. The lock is the type that clicks and will not reopen unless the button is pushed. Not safe for children.
ON the bottom of the drawer it says 199-48 and Factory No 789. Does anyone know anything about this chest? I can send pictures. I found it at a garage sale in 1964. Cindy my email is cstandfest@consolidated.net

I inherited a Lane cedar chest from my grandmother. Serial number: 7480-11 style: 02174b

It had a lovely black finish and a beautiful Chinese design on it. I say had because I shipped it to my Fiancee` for an engagement gift/Christmas gift and during the shipping and delivery it was severely damaged. When my Fiancee` arrived home on the day of delivery she found it upside down with drag marks across the concrete pad in front of her apartment.

Now it's gouged and scratched and the interior shelf is ruined/broken and U.P.S. says they'll pay to have it replaced, I need to find out how much it's worth and get that estimate in writing so they can cut a check.

I can't find this particular model mentioned anywhere I've looked so far and I don't really have the money or the time for a full appraisal. Does anyone know how to find the approximate value of this chest in writing so I can get re-imbursement from U.P.S. for the damage to what was supposed to be a sweet and wonderful gift?

Thanks for reading,

Tim

In case no one hear knows there has bean a recall on all lane chests with self locking latches the ones that lock when you close then and cant be un locked from the inside some children have sufercated in these chests
I called lane 888) 856-8758 and they asked me the serial # and the new lock showed up in the male box no charge

Hears the recall
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Lane Company of Altavista, Va., is announcing a voluntary program to replace the locks on cedar chests manufactured prior to 1987. The Lane Company manufactured approximately 12 million cedar chests from 1912 to 1987 that latch automatically when the lid is closed. Young children playing in the chest can become trapped inside and suffocate.

Between 1977 and 1994, six children suffocated inside Lane cedar chests manufactured with an old design lock. The victims ranged in age from 21 months to ten years old.

Consumers can determine whether their chest has an old lock by closing the chest lid without depressing the locking button and then attempting to open the lid without touching the button. If the lid opens, the chest has the new lock and does not need to be replaced. If the lid does not open, it has the old lock. Additionally, old locks click loudly when the lid is shut, locking the chest automatically

Am looking for information on a recently acquired Lane Silver Jubilee Chest. It was made in 1937(25th Anniversary)and has a small metal commemorative "plaque"
inside the lid stating: 1912-1937 The Lane Silver Jubilee Chest. Contemporary Modern Design. From Australia comes the oriental wood so skillfully matched in a four piece diamond pattern in the center of the front panel. The wood used in the vertical strips and over the oriental wood is Bubinger. Costly black walnut stump is used on each end of the front panel. Top and ends matched American Walnut.

Anyone have any more info or know where I can further research the beautiful chest? The style is "Silver Jubilee Chest", the year 1937. The only other numbers are the patent numbers etched into the wood (burned inside the lid) along with a very pictuesque logo with a Lane Altavista, VA banner under it. Am curious as to how many might have been manufactured? Thanks. susurra@msn.com

Charles,
Thank you for replying to my message. Yes, it is a Lane chest and I have sent 3 emails to the Lane Company through their website and have not gotten a reply yet (I have been trying to figure this out for several months now). I will go back on the website and see if they have a phone number listed.
Thanks for your help!

From Charles, 12/22/2006  7:44 PM

PS Retrofit locks available for free at Lane's website as well :)

From Charles, 12/22/2006  7:42 PM

Nikki,
Is your cedar chest a Lane? Believe the backward method only works on this manufacturer and certain manufacturing date ranges?? If it is a Lane and you still can't figure it out, you can contact them via email at their site and under the customer care section and they will reply. Also replace those old style locks for child safety with new ones that can be opened from the inside.

Hello! I recently purchased a lane cedar chest with style number 6022-50 and serial number 364180. I would like to acquire a copy of the original certificate that came with the chest as well as any information you could give regarding the age and value of the chest. Thank you!

I purchased a coffee table pattern 1050 01 serial number 468170 and a matching end table pattern 1050 05 serial number 467260. I am assuming from prior posts that this means they were manufacturered in 1964. My question is should I refinish them and make the minor repairs they need or should I have it professionally done (i.e. are they worth that kind of TLC). Thanks!

Update on Lane cedar chest serial number. I might have made an error on the date code Month. My serial number is 2785130, Lane told me March 15, 1987, my s/n has 7 digits, your serial number has 6 digits, so it Might be January instead of October, but the day and year should be correct.

From mel, 6/15/2005  3:16 PM

Use Lane serial number as a date code. I just called Lane on my own chest. Read the serial number backwards,Serial 248201 is 10 October, 28 28th, 42 1942. Hope this helps. You can call the Lane hot line for a lock replacement (888) 856-8758 or (888) 856-8751.
