81 Year Old Bograd's Furniture To Close

Furniture World News on

NorthJersey.com reported that Bograd's Furniture based in Patterson, NJ will close it's 30,000 sq. ft. store. A store closing sale will commence on Friday, September 16th.

The article quoted Mark Bograd, president as saying that, "The past year it's become increasingly less fun. Credit markets have strained relationships with suppliers and it's getting more and more difficult for the single-store independent to operate. The model of a single-store, 30,000-square-foot, high-end furniture store where all the inventory is bought and paid for is very difficult to sustain over the long run."

Mark's father, Joe Bograd started working full time for Bograd's in 1956, the Monday after raduating from Cornell University. Since that day, Joe has been the steward of his own family’s tradition of uncompromising service, designer expertise and respect for the customer begun by his father and uncle, Sam and Dave Bograd.

Bograd's has been known for it's outstanding roster of manufacturing partners including Stickley, French Heritage, Henredon, Karges, Century, Baker and more than 100 others. Also, its elegant merchandising eye, and a kind and home spun attitude that has been a delight for consumers, designers, and business partners alike.

Gail Meadoff of Apropos said the following when Joe Bograd was awarded the David Druckman Lifetime Achievement award by the Greater New York Home Furnishings Association. "Joe Bograd loves furniture and the business itself,” said Gail Meadoff of Apropos. “I have never heard him complain about anything business related, or anything else for that matter. He seems to love going to market to meet with factory executives and salespeople, and they all roll out the red carpet for him. He is quite respected and is an angel of a man. My experience with Joe is that he cannot be sold. Instead he buys if he likes what he sees."

“Our family and our staff have always been proud to serve second and third generations of customers and those first-time buyers who depend on our advice,” Mr. Bograd said.  “We love to share the genius of great design and craftsmanship from the most traditional to contemporary; we see perfection in it all.  I guess that is why we sustained nearly 80 years in business, against all odds and many challenging changes in the industry.”
