IKEA Expands In Midwest With Canton, MI Store Opening

IKEA, a leading home furnishings retailer, will open the doors of its Canton, Michigan store to customers at 9:00 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, June 7, 2006. The 311,000 square-foot IKEA Canton is located on 21 acres along Ford Road off I-275 at the intersection with Haggerty Road, is the 28th IKEA store in the U.S. and 236th worldwide. The store employs 400 coworkers, and features 10,000 exclusively designed home furnishings all under one roof, a 300-seat IKEA Restaurant, a supervised children's play area and 1,300 parking spaces. "We are excited to bring the fun and unique IKEA family-friendly shopping experience to Canton, the entire Metro Detroit area, and even all of Michigan," said Mark McCaslin, IKEA Canton store manager. "The excitement, surprises and shopping experience customers will receive truly reflect the enthusiasm the IKEA Canton coworker family feels about this big day and opening the store." Moments before the doors open, McCaslin and Pernille Lopez, president of IKEA North America, will welcome the community into the IKEA customer family with a traditional Swedish log-sawing ceremony, bringing good luck to the new home and all its future visitors. The Honorable Canton Township Supervisor Thomas Yack will give remarks during the morning ceremony. Also participating will be Swedish Consul General for Michigan, Lennart Johansson, who will raise the Swedish flag and State Senator Bruce Patterson and State Representative Phil LaJoy, who together will raise the state of Michigan's flag.
