Hooker Furnishings reports that it is preparing its new 800,000-square-foot warehouse in Savannah, Georgia, for opening during the first week of November. The location of the facility will enable the company to reduce its delivery times to any customer in the continental U.S. serviced out of the Savannah port.
Strategically located less than two miles from route 95, less than 25 miles from route 16 and less than 35 miles from the port of Savannah – which is the fastest-growing container terminal in the nation – the warehouse is strategically located near major transit arteries so that shipments can be expedited to customers with industry-leading transit times.
“The new facility will enable us to substantially increase our overall operating efficiencies,” said Rebecca Colyn, senior vice president of U.S. operations for Hooker Furnishings. “Intentionally designed with a strategic layout and flow that enhances shipping efficiencies, the site features custom racking and materials-handling equipment which will further enhance our industry-leading handling and quality levels.”
Colyn noted that the site’s proximity to the port of Savannah played a large role in the selection of the location, given that the company expects to import more than 8,000 cargo units a year into the facility. “To support this growth, we are especially proud that this initiative will bring 50 new jobs to the Liberty County area of Georgia – just outside of Savannah -- including warehouse supervisors, shipping and receiving administrators, forklift operators, inventory control coordinators and personnel who will perform loading and unloading functions,” she added. “We are very much looking forward to becoming a top employer in the area.”
In addition to the operational efficiencies, the facility also helps to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint. “Because this operation is all under one roof, we no longer have to transport items between buildings, reducing emissions and fuel consumption between warehouses,” Colyn added. “Energy efficient lighting and electric car charging stations have also been installed, reinforcing our commitment to our ongoing corporate environmental initiatives.”
