During these last two years, people have been spending a lot more time inside their homes and, as expected, redecorating projects have been on the rise. RentCafe, an apartment search website, turned to Google to identify what styles are emerging as the new favorites and are going to dominate interior design in 2022. To find out, they analyzed the increase in Google searches for 35 different design styles over the past year.

 

Here’s what they found:

  • Japandi is the #1 trendiest style, seeing the most remarkable rise in popularity – Google searches for Japandi multiplied 13 times in 2021 compared to the prior year.

  • Dark academia, the second-trendiest design style, spiked 405% in Google searches over the past year, while the third-trendiest style, grandmillennial, has seen an increase of 217%.

  • On the other hand, rustic-inspired styles are seeing a decline in popularity. Rustic and shabby chic have both seen a sharp decrease, down 28% in searches in 2021.

  • As for the designs with the most Google searches and thus most popular overall, modern farmhouse claimed the crown (with 25,670 monthly searches), dethroning mid-century modern (24,660) and Scandinavian design (22,100).
