Sharing the success of its newest Ashley Furniture HomeStore with the community, City Furniture donated $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Broward. The donation represents a portion of grand opening sales proceeds from the Ashley Furniture HomeStore that opened recently at 3775 North Federal Highway, on Fort Lauderdale’s “Furniture Row.”

A longtime Habitat for Humanity supporter, City Furniture is the South Florida licensee for the Ashley Furniture HomeStore brand, which is the nation’s top furniture retailer. As more than 100 guests gathered for an April 4 reception at the showroom, City Furniture President Keith Koenig thanked the local Habitat for Humanity of Broward team for building hundreds of affordable homes in partnership with low-income families.

“We love helping families imagine and create a home environment that inspires them,” Koenig explained. “Our people focus on achieving that goal in our stores, and through Habitat for Humanity, we can extend our reach to help more people fulfill their dreams.” The Ashley Furniture HomeStore grand opening donation will go toward purchasing materials to construct a home during Habitat for Humanity of Broward’s annual Women’s Build this fall, according to Habitat Board Member Nancy Daly.

On an ongoing basis, all City Furniture and Ashley Furniture HomeStore showrooms in Broward County encourage customers to donate their old furniture to Habitat’s ReStore home improvement thrift store, located at 505 E. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The company has donated funds for two delivery trucks that help Habitat transport gently-used furniture donations. The company is piloting the used furniture collection program in Broward, while exploring ways to play a similar role for Habitat for Humanity affiliates in all City Furniture’s Southeast and Southwest Florida markets  Since Habitat opened its local ReStore in 2000, the furniture retailer has delivered truckloads of scratch-and-dent items to help stock the store. City Furniture’s people have also worked on the Habitat home named for the company, and Keith’s wife Doreen serves on the organization’s board.

“City Furniture’s creativity and support for our mission make a tremendous difference as we work to build homes and keep pace with demand for quality used furniture,” said Daly, who chairs the Habitat ReStore. She added that Habitat for Humanity of Broward plans to build 30 homes this year for hardworking families in need.

As he adds new stores throughout the tri-county region, Koenig said that opening East Broward’s first Ashley Furniture HomeStore was an ideal opportunity to give back to Broward County’s community. The location is just minutes away from the Commercial Blvd./Dixie Highway site where his late brother Kevin Koenig launched the company with the first Waterbed City store in 1971. The company now operates 10 Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations and 14 City Furniture showrooms.
