Steve and Marty Darvin, third-generation owners of Darvin Furniture & Mattress, were recently honored with the City of Hope Spirit of Life Award. City of Hope is one of the nation's largest cancer research and treatment organizations and leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses.
City of Hope recognizes industry leaders each year for their outstanding professional and philanthropic contributions at the Spirit of Life Award Dinner, which was held April 23 in North Carolina.
Darvin Furniture & Mattress, Chicagoland's largest furniture and mattress store, is celebrating its 103rd anniversary this year, an achievement most businesses never reach. For third- generation owners Steve and Marty Darvin, having their name associated with such a familiar Chicagoland business comes with added responsibilities that include giving back to help others in need.
"Marty and I consider ourselves very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be involved with City of Hope for much of our careers," says Steve Darvin. "Their outright commitment to delivering the cures of tomorrow to the people who need them today makes it easy to support such inspirational work."
Research and technology developed at City of Hope have been the basis for numerous breakthrough cancer medicines, as well as human synthetic insulin and monoclonal antibodies. City of Hope brings a uniquely integrated model to patients spanning cancer care, research and development, academics and training, and innovation initiatives.
"It is humbling for Steve and me to be recognized for something we have always felt was simply part of our jobs – to lead by example," says Marty Darvin. "We are honored to be receiving the Spirit of Life Award from City of Hope."
This year’s campaign raised $1.7 million to advance research and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases. Today, Darvin Furniture is 100 percent employee owned. More than 200 Darvin employees participated in the event and more than 500 customers contributed to the City of Hope fundraiser leading up to the Awards Dinner.
"I am thrilled to be part of a company that cares and extremely excited to see Steve and Marty honored for their efforts helping others," says Darvin Furniture & Mattress President Will Harris.
City of Hope recently completed the acquisition of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a network of oncology hospitals and outpatient care centers across the United States, expanding access to world-class research and cancer care to patients in the Chicago area. City of Hope now has one of the largest geographic footprints in cancer research and treatment, providing cancer patients with timely access to exceptional care, clinical trials, and leading-edge innovation.
The Spirit of Life Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for a century, and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration. Darvin Furniture & Mattress is located at 15400 La Grange Road in Orland Park, Illinois.
