fiVO Design Ties for Top Score on 2023 Wood Furniture Scorecard

Furniture World News Desk on 11/1/2023

fiVO Design ("fiVO"), an Andover, MA based furniture designer, manufacturer, and retailer was awarded a Top Score on the 2023 Wood Furniture Scorecard ("Scorecard"), a joint initiative by the National Wildlife Federation ("NWF") and Sustainable Furnishings Council ("SFC") that assesses North American furniture retailers on their wood sourcing policies. fiVO shares equal billing with Cisco Home as the two highest scoring companies on this year's Scorecard, receiving 36 out of 39 possible points.

fiVO designs, manufactures, and sells their line of wood furniture featuring their patented joinery system. The premise of their designs is multifunctional pieces that adapt as the users' space or needs change. fiVO's dedication to producing sustainable furniture has been evident since the inception of their line just a couple of years ago. Their second, consecutive Top Scorecard demonstrates their commitment to sustainability. fiVO is proving to be a leader in the industry, setting an example for even industry veterans.

fiVO takes a holistic approach to sustainability," shares Stewart Junge, US Navy Veteran and fiVO's owner. "As the designer, manufacturer, and retailer, we are in control of critical decisions such as solely using FSC-certified wood to prevent deforestation, designing for adaptability, utilizing formaldehyde-free finish to keep homes safe, manufacturing durable pieces for long useful lives, and incorporating recycled materials without foam fillers in our packaging. In true Bauhaus style, we have created works of sustainable, functional art."

The Scorecard features furniture retailers that demonstrate a willingness to help protect forests and contribute to a more sustainable future. The methodology focuses on wood sourcing policies, goals, and practices. "Our sustainability story has many facets. We are proud to be recognized by the Scorecard for our wood sourcing policy," shares Deanna Junge, fiVO's Director of Business Development. "We feel it is equally important to design furniture that will not contribute to the growing landfills being left behind for future generations. Our patented joinery ensures a durable, modular construction that can be taken apart over and over without risking damage. It also allows the user to reconfigure a piece so it can morph into another use or space rather than contributing to a landfill."

The furniture industry's contribution to growing landfills is a grave concern. A recent article in the New York Times by Debra Kamin drew attention to a pandemic shift in consumer purchases to 'Fast Furniture' resulting in growing landfills. Kamin states an astonishing statistic of Americans discarding more than 12 million tons of furniture each year, "creating mountains of solid waste that have grown 450 percent since 1960, according to the EPA." fiVO is doing its part in designing, manufacturing, and selling innovative, sustainable furniture to help rewrite this story.

"SFC member fiVO stands as a genuine trailblazer in sustainability! Their fundamental approach revolves around circularity, featuring distinctive furniture designed for easy reconfiguration. And they have committed to reducing carbon emissions by exclusively utilizing FSC-certified wood," shares SFC Executive Director Scarlette Tapp. "SFC celebrates these accomplishments and fiVO's steadfast promise to craft furniture that promotes longevity without harming the world's forests."
