In Avondale, Arizona, King Koil has advanced its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives, with a focus on new sustainability initiatives. The company, under the leadership of CEO David Binke and Senior Vice President of Operations Don Pflug, has incorporated a series of measures aimed at reducing environmental impact.
The ESG strategy includes 15 key performance indicators (KPIs), with a significant emphasis on environmental stewardship. Notable initiatives include reducing plastic and cardboard usage by 30%, transitioning to reusable resin pallets to decrease monthly wood pallet waste, recycling foam materials to achieve a 10% reduction, optimizing electrical usage in facilities, and promoting a supplier sustainability checklist.
Since the introduction of these KPIs in 2022, King Koil has observed tangible improvements and plans to further broaden these measures in 2024. The company emphasizes the importance of understanding a product's full lifecycle and integrates sustainability education into its corporate culture.
King Koil's approach to sustainability began with substituting synthetic materials with natural alternatives such as latex, cotton, wool, recycled fabrics, and bio-based foams. Insights from European partners have also inspired the company to strengthen its sustainable practices.
King Koil, with a heritage dating back to 1898, has grown from a small six-employee operation to a global entity with more than 30 licensees in over 90 countries. The company, which originated as United States Bedding in St. Paul, Minnesota, coined the name King Koil in the 1930s following advancements in bedspring technology.
