Sherwin-Williams Unveils New SHER-WOOD® EA Hydroplus™ Waterborne Wood Coating Technology

Furniture World News Desk on 1/8/2024

Sherwin-Williams has launched its SHER-WOOD® Environmentally Adaptive (EA) Hydroplus™ technology. This new waterborne wood coating offers enhanced adaptability across various environmental conditions without the usual performance drawbacks of water-based coatings.

SHER-WOOD EA Hydroplus is a self-sealing, water-reducible acrylic system, providing clear and pigmented finishes. It matches the performance of certain solvent-based counterparts, offering excellent film hardness and chemical resistance. This technology is targeted at manufacturers in the kitchen cabinet, furniture, and building products sectors who require high-performance coatings in diverse colors.

The new coating adapts to different environmental conditions, allowing wood shops to maintain efficiency and a high-quality finish without extra application measures.

“There is massive demand for a waterborne product that can perform across a wide range of environmental conditions,” said Kevin O'Neill, Marketing Director, Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood. “Our customers have asked us for a solution like EA Hydroplus—our goal was to provide a robust technology that performs the same on a hot day or a cold day, in a dry environment or a humid one, helping wood shops maintain optimal production without the need to compensate for less-than-ideal environmental conditions.”

EA Hydroplus is designed to hang well in vertical applications, preventing runs or sags, and is characterized by:

  • Low VOC content and GREENGUARD Gold certification, aiding in achieving sustainability goals.
  • Absence of pot life, allowing for storage and reuse.
  • Simplified cleanup and waste disposal.
  • Safer storage and transportation options.

Kevin O'Neill also noted, “EA Hydroplus is a game-changer in terms of how a waterborne coating is applied. We achieved desirable, consistent performance in every scenario we tested the product in—and it has outperformed competitive formulations when applied to substrates in terms of flow, leveling, and hang.”

Other features include compatibility with the Sherwin-Williams Color Express™ program for consistent color strength, exceptional flow and leveling for a smooth finish, scratch resistance, improved sandability, and self-sealability with excellent coverage in two coats. It also meets or surpasses KCMA test requirements with proper application.
