ORGATEC 2024 to Highlight Circular Biomaterials

Furniture World News Desk on 7/1/2024

From October 22 to 25, 2024, ORGATEC, in collaboration with Haute Innovation, will present the #CircularBiomaterials Focus Area in Hall 4.2 at the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds. This event aims to support the industry's shift towards a circular economy by providing insights into the future of circular material technologies within the biological cycle.

“Sustainability and the circular economy are crucial to ORGATEC,” says the event’s director, Thomas Postert. “We are working closely with our exhibitors to present material innovations that are not only circular but also provide extensive commercial and technical benefits.”

Biocircular Materials

The #CircularBiomaterials Focus Area will feature materials produced from renewable sources that can be returned to the biological cycle at the end of their useful life. These biocircular materials offer environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic products with higher carbon footprints. Examples include biocircular textiles from banana fibers, seagrass-based furniture foams, and upholstery fillings made from bulrush fibers. These materials are naturally biodegradable and possess technical and commercial properties comparable to conventional options.

Benefits

The new materials showcased at ORGATEC provide several benefits, including increased material efficiency and enhanced user well-being in interior spaces. They also contribute to the proportion of office and contract furniture that can be returned to nature, promoting closed-loop cycles and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This is a significant step towards climate-neutral production processes, which are increasingly important for businesses.

Innovative Materials from 14 Countries

Visitors to ORGATEC will have the opportunity to experience these materials firsthand in the #CircularBiomaterials Focus Area. There will be 30 exhibits from developers, research institutes, manufacturers, and designers from 14 countries. The showcase will be organized into four key topics: Organic Waste Streams, Regrowing Materials, Biocircular Materials, and Smart Nature & Biofabrication.
