Mattress Recycling Council Expanding to Oregon in 2025

Furniture World News Desk on 8/7/2024

Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) authorized the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) to establish and administer a statewide mattress recycling program in the state. Oregon DEQ approved a modified operating plan, including a budget and stewardship assessment to fund the program. MRC will launch its Oregon program on Jan. 1, 2025.

Pursuant to the plan and Oregon law, retailers, manufacturers, importers, distributors and renovators of mattresses and foundations sold for use in Oregon must register their business with MRC. Those selling these products to end-users – individual consumers or a large-volume buyers – must also be prepared starting Jan. 1, 2025, to collect the $22.50 per unit stewardship assessment, and displaying that amount as a line item on the receipt, invoice or other sales documentation that the seller provides the purchaser. Visit MRCreporting.org to register or for more information.

“MRC encourages the mattress industry, solid waste facilities and other interested parties to learn about this program and understand their role in a successful recycling program,” says MRC’s Chief Operating Officer Mike O’Donnell. “We offer a library of resources and have a wonderful team ready to answer your questions.”

Between now and the program’s launch on Jan. 1, 2025, MRC will implement a statewide network to collect and recycle discarded mattresses from communities and businesses across Oregon, as well as publicize the legal obligations of different parties in the mattress distribution chain.

About the Mattress Recycling Council

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit organization that operates recycling programs in states that have passed mattress recycling laws. Founded by the bedding industry, MRC operates statewide mattress recycling programs in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Collectively, these programs have recycled over 12 million mattresses and now recycle nearly 2 million mattresses each year. To inform residents and businesses about the availability and importance of mattress recycling, MRC created a public education campaign branded Bye Bye Mattress. For more information, visit MattressRecyclingCouncil.org or MRCreporting.org, contact info@mrc-us.org or call 1-855-229-1691.
