IKEA U.S. and National Sleep Foundation Reveal New Sleep Study Findings

Furniture World News Desk on 1/10/2025

IKEA U.S., in collaboration with the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), has released findings from Sleep Matters: An Illuminating Report on Sleep, a study exploring Americans’ sleep habits, challenges, and attitudes. The report aims to raise awareness and provide practical solutions to help people achieve better sleep.

The study surveyed over 2,000 U.S. adults to identify barriers to quality sleep, the impact of insufficient sleep on daily life, and actionable insights for improvement. Key findings reveal that many Americans are not getting the NSF-recommended 7–9 hours of sleep per night, with stress, responsibilities, and inconsistent bedtime routines cited as major obstacles.

“At IKEA, we believe sleep should be a pleasure, not a source of pressure,” said Tania Moreira, Bedroom Business Manager, IKEA U.S. “With 80 years of experience in sleep solutions, we love helping our customers create the bedroom of their dreams. This collaboration with the National Sleep Foundation is helping us shine a light on sleep challenges so that we can better educate and take care of the many.”

Highlights from Sleep Matters: An Illuminating Report on Sleep

  • Barriers to Sleep:
    • 67% of participants reported not having a consistent, relaxing bedtime routine.
    • Stress and racing thoughts keep 4 in 10 people from sleeping well, with younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X) more affected than older generations.
  • Attitudes Toward Sleep:
    • 86% of respondents are willing to sacrifice activities they enjoy—such as time with friends and family, dining out, and attending events—in favor of better sleep.
    • On average, Americans spend over 30 minutes per day thinking about sleep, totaling nearly 8 days per year.
  • Sleep Solutions:
    • Cool temperatures, mattress comfort, and dark rooms were rated the most important factors for better sleep.

“At the same time the National Sleep Foundation recognizes its 35th year as the global voice of sleep health for the public, we’re joining with IKEA to share new insights on people’s sleep experiences,” said John Lopos, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. “Findings from this research amplify reasons why people are concerned about their sleep, plus reveal unique opportunities to help anyone and everyone be their Best Slept Self®.”

Survey Insights and Predictions:

  • Layered Bedrooms for Personalization: Cool bedding, mattress toppers, and layered window treatments are predicted to become key trends as people focus on temperature, comfort, and darkness in their sleeping environments.

  • New Sleep Products: 70% of respondents are willing to try new products, with medium-firm mattresses expected to be a popular choice for balanced comfort.

  • Creativity and Sleep: Two-thirds of adults report that a good night's sleep enhances creativity, leading to predictions of bold textile patterns and personalized bedroom designs in 2025.

  • Technology and Sleep: As 8 in 10 people turn to electronic devices when they can’t sleep, attention is shifting toward minimizing screen use and establishing consistent bedtime routines.

  • Focus on Routines: Americans are expected to prioritize small actions like dimming lights, turning off devices, and self-care to create calming bedtime experiences.

By addressing these challenges, IKEA is working to provide affordable, sustainable sleep products that promote better rest, supporting its mission to improve the everyday lives of its customers.
