Furniture World News Desk on 5/9/2014

Sleep Country USA, reported that it recently held its annual fundraiser – the dual-city Pajama Bowl for Foster Kids – on April 27th in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. The 9th annual event raised a record-breaking $159,000, and to date, has raised over $900,000. All participant donations help fund the “little extras” foster children often go without.

“Participating in extracurricular activities greatly improves a child’s quality of life and potential for future success. Unfortunately, foster youth often go without these experiences due to a lack of funding,” said Jeff Judy, Executive Director – Pacific Northwest at Olive Crest, a Pajama Bowl beneficiary. “With support from Sleep Country’s Pajama Bowl, the foster children we serve have been able to attend summer camp, participate in sports teams by being able to get the equipment and shoes, participate in music with instruments, and get a leg up in school with extra support. We’re incredibly thankful to watch them gain a sense of belonging, build their self confidence and create positive memories alongside their peers.”

Days later on May 2nd, Sleep Country held a Community Day event, bringing 545 employee-owners to Seattle to volunteer in various projects throughout that region, such as creating birthday cards for foster children, sorting donated items for foster youth, re-packaging bulk food into meals, creating tie blankets for families affected by the Oso landslide and repairing hiking trails. This was part of Sleep Country’s overall commitment to helping the communities it serves, which continues throughout the year with every employee-owner receiving 2 paid days to volunteer.
