One of New Jersey’s most distinguished furniture retailers, Bograd’s Fine Furniture in Riverdale announced that it is paying tribute to its historic beginnings as it is poised to mark its 80th anniversary in business.
Now managed by Mark Bograd, the third-generation of the original founding family, the retailer treats first-time shoppers to the same courtesy and respect, expert service, quality and value that third- and fourth-generation customers have come to rely on.
Mark is the son of Joe and Marcia Bograd. Himself the son of company co-founder Sam Bograd, Joe’s experience in the furniture business spans some 50 years. According to Joe, “We appreciate the tremendous support we’ve had from our sophisticated consumers, who still come to us from all over the Tri-state area. I’m proud of how Bograd’s has helped bring families closer together and added to their cherished homes and traditions over the years. Our store has had tremendous growth and success since we first opened in 1930. We owe so much to our loyal customers, and we want to thank them first and foremost.”
Joe Bograd’s father Samuel and Joe’s uncle Dave arrived in America from Russia in the early 1920s, looking to start a new life just like millions of other immigrant families. They launched their first enterprise in Paterson – one of America’s great industrial cities at the time – as door-to-door salesman selling dry goods and clothing. Their reputation for outstanding service and long-lasting relationships gave them a distinct advantage when they made the move into the highly-competitive furniture business.
Although the Great Depression had already taken a firm grip on the US, Sam and Dave opened Bograd Brothers Furniture on Market Street in Paterson on August 1, 1930. Supported by loyal customers from their previous business, their new store quickly became a major success. Five years later to the day, to keep pace with a growing demand, Bograd’s moved to a bigger location on Main Street, which was then expanded several times over the next 60-odd years, eventually to be identified by the slogan Five Floors of Fine Furniture.
“In the years after the Second World War, the people who settled throughout the New York Metropolitan area concentrated on hard work and raising families, and we were able to provide them with quality furniture and service as they moved into their new homes and set about pursuing the American Dream,” explains Marcia Bograd.
Today, the Bograd family tradition of personal touch and lasting relationships endures. Marcia and Mark have been instrumental in Bograd’s expansion at their current site in Riverdale, to which they moved in 1996. Several years ago Bograd’s opened a second building in Riverdale to serve as an auxiliary selling space, outlet and warehouse.
“It’s important to know that you can always talk to a Bograd at Bograd’s. That’s one of the things that makes us different from other retailers, one of the things that has made us what we are today,” says Mark Bograd.
