The American Society of Furniture Designers (www.asfd.com) announced that it will recognize sustainable furniture design with a Pinnacle Design Achievement Award for excellence in green home furnishings for the 2010 competition.
All Pinnacle finalists as chosen by the regular panel of judges will be reviewed by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, said furniture designer and Pinnacle Chair, Dudley Moore. “We believe that the addition of the green award is a natural and logical extension to the Pinnacle Awards and of what we think good design can represent.”
Entries will be considered across the gamut of categories. The SFC will review sustainability benchmarks that are likely to apply to product features such as wood, finish, cushioning, textile, leather, metal, glass and plastic content.
The entries will continue to be judged on good value and design, Moore said. The new Pinnacle award, called “Green Leaf,” will be awarded to one of three qualifying finalists from all fifteen categories.
ASFD President Steve Hodges said last year’s Pinnacle judges were very enthusiastic about the addition of a green design award.
“Everyone is very excited about it. We see this category as becoming increasingly important,” he said. “It also helps the Pinnacle Awards widen its net.”
Those wishing to submit entries for the 2010 Pinnacle Awards will have the option of entering a traditional category and ticking a box to also have it considered for the Green Leaf award. An additional fee of $50 for non-members and $25 for ASFD members will be assessed to these entries.
The deadline for all Pinnacle entries will be June 1, 2010. Judging will take place at High Point University on June 23rd.
The Pinnacle Awards were created in April 1995 by the ASFD board of directors to promote design quality and encourage the recognition of furniture designers within the retail home furnishings industry.
