Hooker Furniture announced that it has contributed over $13,800 to international humanitarian and medical organizations offering medical care and food distribution to those affected by the Haiti earthquake in January.
During two weeks in mid-February, Hooker Furniture, Bradington-Young and Sam Moore employees contributed a total of $6,916.60, with a dollar-for-dollar company match for a grand total of $13,833.20. A contribution of $6,504.10 was designated to Save the Children Federation, a global humanitarian group currently working in partnership with the World Food Program distributing food supplies in the area surrounding Port au Prince. In addition, a contribution of $7,329.10 was designated to Doctors Without Borders, a volunteer organization assisting with the overwhelming medical needs of those injured in the quake.
“It was heartwarming to watch so many people come together in our company to help others who are suffering. The outpouring of support of our employees enabled us to surpass our goal of $5,000 each in employee and company contributions,” said Anne Jacobsen, vice president-human resources at Hooker.
One of the highlights of the fundraising period was an employee bake sale held at the Hooker corporate offices here in which over 20 employees prepared baked goods and $3,000 was raised for Haiti relief in one day.
Jacobsen added that charity organizations were carefully screened, and the two chosen were selected because “these organizations are currently on the ground in Haiti and are giving help directly to the people where they are struggling most, in their need for food and medical care.
