Furnitureland South is proud to announce the nomination of its founders Darrell and Stella Harris for induction into the American Furniture Hall of Fame. Mr. and Mrs.. Harris were nominated by Jeff Young, President of Schnadig Furniture, and the nomination was seconded by Steve Kincaid, President of Kincaid Furniture. The Harris’ nomination is the first time in the American Furniture Hall of Fame’s 22-year history that a couple has ever been considered for inclusion on the ballot.
Darrell and Stella Harris founded Furnitureland South with the goal of providing value to furniture customers in North Carolina. They started the company with a few catalogs, several showroom samples and an old truck. For years, Darrell personally sold, delivered and serviced furniture, while Stella divided her time between caring for their two young sons and picking up the mail, making bank deposits and doing the payroll.
Forty years later, the Harris’ hard work and business acumen have resulted in a multi-faceted Furnitureland South campus featuring 1.3 million square feet of showroom space, a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled Distribution Center, a sales force of more than 150 expert Sales & Design Consultants, and a nationwide delivery team. Having shipped to more than 50 countries, Furnitureland South is not only the premiere home furnishings destination for the United States, but for countries all over the world. Both Darrell and Stella are still fully active in the daily leadership of the company. Darrell continues to create and maintain successful relationships with more than 500 manufacturers, while Stella lends her great knowledge of product and design trends to the store’s merchandising, and spearheads the company’s many philanthropic projects. Since 1969, their mission hasn’t changed: to provide a world-class shopping experience for quality home furnishings through a commitment to excellence and integrity in value and service.
The American Furniture Hall of Fame is an international, industry-wide effort organized to honor those individuals whose outstanding achievements have contributed to the continued growth and development of the U.S. furniture industry, as well as to research, collect and preserve the industry’s cultural, economic, and artistic history.
Each fall, the American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation hosts a gala banquet to honor the individuals who are inducted into the Hall of Fame. The "Affie" is presented to each inductee, who then becomes a permanent member, the industry’s highest honor.
