The American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) is pleased to announce that its 2011 conference will be held in Savannah, G.A., in conjunction with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).  The conference dates have been set for May 9-11.

While details of the conference have yet to be finalized, ASFD and SCAD will jointly host the event, which will focus on the future of the profession of furniture design and how the value of furniture design can be more effectively promoted to the general public.  The event will be open to as many people who wish to attend, including students, manufacturers, retailers and suppliers.

ASFD Executive Director Christine Evans and ASFD President Steve Hodges met with officials of SCAD in July to discuss the conference at the invitation of Antonio Larosa, Chair of the Furniture Design Department of SCAD.  During their visit, Evans and Hodges met with Larosa, an ASFD member, and other SCAD officials, including Victor Ermoli, Dean of the School of Design, and toured the school’s facilities.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with SCAD,” Hodges said.  “Their energy and commitment to making this conference a significant event for our industry was contagious.”

Added Larosa, “I’m very happy that ASFD has accepted our offer to host their first university-sponsored conference in Savannah.  The idea was to have all of the industries related to furniture including design, manufacturing and education merging for three days to exchange ideas and talk about the future of this multi-million dollar business that has been rapidly changing over the past few years.  As a furniture designer, educator and long-time member of ASFD, I’m looking forward to meeting here at SCAD Savannah the most cutting-edge thinkers in the furniture design industry.”

Details of the conference, including accommodations and registration will be forthcoming.
