La-Z-Boy reported that the trend forecast says the definition of neutral is changing. Usually made up of browns, blacks and blues, the typical palette is shifting in home décor. Gray has become a staple neutral in the last year, and close behind is purple, which has traditionally been considered only for accents. Design buffs say that purple is making its way into mainstream decorating.
This fall, at the High Point Furniture Market in High Point, N.C., the La-Z-Boy showroom will feature several purple “neutrals,” – all with a violet base, but incorporating a mixture of other tones too. Colors like “Aubergine,” “Lilac” and “Beet” demonstrate how the purple neutral is growing in popularity.
“In the past couple of years, gray has become a staple in the modern neutral palette,” said Penny Eudy, product manager of upholstery for La-Z-Boy. “Now we’re seeing the same trend emerge with purple as a neutral base. Consumers are willing to break away from the standard earth tones and expand into hues that are still just as warm, but add a deeper feeling to the décor.”
A neutral color is typically used as the “background” for a room. Most often incorporated throughout the colors in paint, furniture and accessories, it is the theme that runs throughout the décor. In most cases, the neutral is the base color from which all other décor choices are made. Once the base is established, decorators can choose to match or contrast with the base color, depending on their style preference.
“The new neutrals allow consumers to feel like they are taking a little bit of a risk but still playing by the traditional rules of decorating,” said Eudy.
