Founded by Ben Gorman in 1940 as a damaged railroad freight company in Detroit, the organization would take damaged freight from railroads, typically canned goods, and resell them to the community. Not soon after, he saw damaged furniture coming through the store, which he would fix and resell to the community. Gorman’s quickly became the place to purchase furniture in metropolitan Detroit.
In 1965, Gorman sold the company to Bernie Moray, now CEO. Moray continues to lead the company with business partners Tom Lias, Jeff Roberts and John Moray.
A year after purchasing Gorman’s, Moray opened the Contemporary Gallery in Southfield. Beginning in 1977, he opened their traditional furnishing showrooms, starting with the Troy location. Novi followed in 1995 and Lakeside in 2000. To this day, Gorman’s employees the highest caliber interior design professionals and offers the finest in furnishings and accessories from manufacturers such as Stickley, Henredon, Lexington, Stanley and Drexel Heritage.
“In the 45 years since I purchased Gorman’s, I am truly amazed at what we have accomplished as a company,” said Bernie Moray, CEO of Gorman’s. “We make sure that we never forget where we came from and what Ben Gorman did to start this company. We strive to embody his ideals and commitment to quality and customer service every day.”
