Florida manufacturer Commercial Bedding Company, Inc., announced the introduction of a new recyclable mattress. The new Green Karma sleep set is filled with elastomeric fibers created from recycled plastic water bottles; it’s the newest addition to the healthy and earth-friendly line from Body Rest Mattress, a division of St. Petersburg’s locally owned and operated Commercial Bedding Company. “This mattress is amazing,” says company owner and President Carl Calhoun. “Not only is it 100% recyclable, it’ll give you a great night’s sleep. We’re very proud to be the only manufacturer in the U.S. to offer a mattress of this type.”
Commercial Bedding says it was the first bedding manufacturer in America to produce a flame resistant mattress and a pillow top mattress. Their efforts to respond to consumer demand for green products began more than five years ago; the Green Karma mattress is the result of intense research and testing to create a 100% natural, biodegradable, non-flammable, non-allergenic mattress.
Not only does the Green Karma mattress offer superb support and comfort, when it’s reached the end of its useful life as a mattress, both ticking and filling can be recycled for reuse. “Besides being green, we wanted this mattress to offer the same level of comfort as our luxury products,” explains Calhoun. “We kept experimenting with the design and construction and composition until we came up with a mattress that fully supports an adult body while reducing pressure on hips and shoulders.”
The foamless Green Karma mattress far exceeds the requirements of Federal Standard 1633. When exposed to flame, the dense, flexible plastic fibers simply melt, producing no toxic fumes or chemical gases.
Body Rest’s Green Line was launched last year with their Green Earth mattress, a non-allergenic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal product made of latex rubber and natural bamboo. A third Green Line product is in the development stages and will be ready for production in 2012.
Commercial Bedding also produces a luxury line of mattresses, called Panache. The company serves consumers, retailers, institutions, and health facilities throughout the Southeast and is in the process of expanding their market to other areas.
“The response to our Green Line has far exceeded our expectations,” says Calhoun. “Apparently, the urge to reduce our carbon footprint is genuine; people aren’t just talking the talk, they’re buying the products. We’re pleased to be doing our part and look forward to intensifying our eco-friendly efforts.”
