The International Furnishings & Design Association (IFDA) Educational Foundation has awarded three academic scholarships, one for $1,500 and two for $1,000, to IFDA student members in the Arizona, Northern California and North Central Chapters. The scholarships were announced at the first educational symposium held by the- Foundation in Charleston. Janice Jennings, a graduate student at Arizona State University in Tempe, was awarded the $1,500 IFDAEF scholarship underwritten in 1997 by the IFDA Illinois Chapter in memory of Vercille Voss, Angela Coggins, studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Diego, and Beverly Glaser, a student at Mankato State University in Minnesota, were the two $1,000 scholarship recipients. Jennings maintains a 4.0 GPA in her pursuit of a Master of Science in Design degree at ASU's College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Upon completion of her degree, she intends to pursue her Ph.D. and teach at ASU. Her long-range career goals are to obtain a professorship in a School of Design and participate as a design team member to create universally usable office furniture. Coggins, majoring in Interior Design, is on the President's Honor Roll with a 3.83 GPA and serves as A.S.I.D. student chapter president. Her plans are to become a practicing interior designer and also "share my knowledge with the economically disadvantaged and physically challenged in need of functional and aesthetic design services." Glaser, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in her Interior Design/ Construction Management major, is minoring in Marketing in her pursuit of a B.S. degree. A recipient of three scholarships, she remains on the Dean's List each semester. She hopes to work either in showroom management or in an architectural firm. The selection of these three scholarship recipients, who are enrolled as full-time students, was based on academic achievement and accomplishments, industry involvement and future goals. Besides the scholarship application, each student submitted an academic transcript, a brief essay explaining why the student was deserving of the award and a letter of recommendation from a professor. The IFDA Educational Foundation, the philanthropic arm of IFDA, supports the furnishings and design industry through various grant and scholarship programs aimed at professionals, students and institutions. Donations to the Foundation are considered charitable and are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more information on IFDA programs e-mail them at jennifer_lewis@dc.sba.com.
