MGM Transport, the leading carrier specializing in furniture transport and logistics, is replacing its 35-year-old Totowa, New Jersey distribution center with a new, state-of-the-art facility. The new distribution center will be built just minutes from MGM's current Totowa facility at 70 Maltese Drive. The plans call for a 40,000 square-foot cross-dock terminal, allowing simultaneous handling of inbound and outbound shipments. The new distribution center will offer improved functionality and efficiency . at a long-term cost savings to the company. The new facility will continue to be the company's main terminal in the Northeast, serving as a hub for home furnishings deliveries from domestic manufacturers as well as importers. "The Port of Newark, just 20 miles away from Totowa, is a one of the major import centers for the home furnishings industry," said Louis Massood, Executive Vice President of MGM Transport. "Our presence in New Jersey is ideal for tapping into the multi-billion dollar importing business and for providing the warehousing, consolidation and delivery needs of our customers in the Northeast." The timetable for the opening of the new distribution center is contingent upon securing a new tenant for the existing facility, but Massood expects it to be up and running late next year or early 2003. Based in High Point, N.C., MGM Transport provides the best transportation service in the furnishings industry, with 30 percent faster transit time and 75 percent fewer claims than its competitors. The company offers 24-hour access to information on shipments and contents, plus expert guidance on how to use that information to better serve customers and improve business. With a fleet of 230 tractors and 710 Great Dane trailers, the $40 million company serves two-thirds of the home furnishings retailers on the East Coast and two-thirds of home furnishings manufacturers nationwide. Customers include Thomasville Furniture, Stanley, Bassett, Federated Department Stores, Carson Pirie Scott, Baker Furniture of Dallas, Raymour & Flanigan Furniture and Thomasville Home Furnishings of Arizona.
