Gale Steves, Vice President and Editor-in Chief of Home Magazine, honored a retailer, a significant designer, 12 manufacturers and the respective product designers, here today, at the fourth annual American Furniture Awards reception sponsored by the magazine. Crate & Barrel and Bob Timberlake won in the Retailer of the Year and "Designer who Made a Difference" categories, respectively.
Steves, who herself was recognized last month by the International Furnishings and Design Association with a Circle of Excellence Award, said, "We selected these products to be brought to the attention of our readers and the public, because they answer needs that might not be immediately apparent. We also honored the designers of these products because we wanted to emphasize to our readers that these pieces don't just emerge from a box--they come from the soul and inspiration of a talented person."
Crate & Barrel was chosen for "taking the angst out of decorating," and Timberlake for finding inspiration in attic treasures for everything from furniture to flooring. To illustrate the Crate & Barrel style, Home selected the Daddy-O chair designed for the store by Bob Williams of the Mitchell Gold Company. For Timberlake's achievement, the magazine selected the Collector's cocktail table from Lexington Furniture's World of Bob Timberlake collection.
Along with furniture, the awards recognize carpet and rugs, and new this year, lighting and accessories.
In the furniture category, Century Furniture and product designer Bill Faber were cited for a skirted dining chair in chenille upholstery; Vermont Tubbs for a nine-drawer dresser from the Meetinghouse Collection designed by Blake C. Tovin; Kip Stewart's glass-top Metro dining table for Ethan Allen; Universal Furniture for a leather-tufted sleigh bed designed by Alexander Julian; Lloyd/Flanders' high back lounge chair from The Heirloom Collection, using Marshall Lloyd's wicker technology ; Doug Krieger's Mission executive desk for Sauder Woodworking and the Windrift Collection's bath chest by Broyhill's Design Team.
Home also honored Vietri for the Foresta collection of Italian earthenware, designed by Marco and Christina Fortini; George Kovacs for a desk lamp by Robert Sonneman from the New Age collection and Nourison for a hand hooked, wool, area rug from the Terrazzo Collection by Alex Peykar.
