Home Magazine will honor the 12 winners of its fourth annual American Furniture Awards at a cocktail reception during the International Home Furnishings Market on Thursday, October 15th in High Point, North Carolina. Manufacturers and product designers plan to attend. "We recognize and promote these designers as well as the manufacturers both at the awards ceremony and in our editorial coverage, for creating 'the best of the best' in home furnishings," says Gale Steves, Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of Home. "Most readers don't realize that there's an individual behind every design, and how much of a product designer's thought, vision, experience and inspiration is behind each piece. Our awards story in the November issue leads with designer Bill Faber, who created a skirted dining chair for Century Furniture." The magazine will name Bob Timberlake as the 1998 "Designer Who Made a Difference." "Timberlake's attic treasures became inspiration for everything from furniture to flooring," states Home in the prominent four-page spread. His cocktail table from Lexington Furniture's World of Bob Timberlake collection, a best-seller since it was introduced eight years ago, is the example that the magazine selected to illustrate this designer's work. Along with Century Furniture, in this category Home will also honor: Vermont Tubbs for a nine-drawer dresser from the Meetinghouse Collection designed by Blake C. Tovin; Kip Stewart's glass-top Metro dining table for Ethan Allen; Universal Furniture for a leather-tufted sleigh bed designed by Alexander Julian; Lloyd/Flanders' high back lounge chair from The Heirloom Collection, using Marshall Lloyd's wicker technology; Doug Krieger's Mission executive desk for Sauder Woodworking and the Windrift Collection's bath chest by Broyhill's Design Team. For "taking the angst out of decorating," Crate & Barrel was named retailer of the year. The Daddy-O chair by Bob Williams of the Mitchell Gold Company, created for Crate & Barrel, illustrates the store's approachable style. For the first time, the awards will recognize lighting and accessories. "Last year we added carpeting," says Steves. "We interpret furniture in its broadest sense, to include more than upholstered and case goods. Readers tell us that they can pick furniture, but they have a difficult time selecting accessories," says Steves. Vietri's Foresta collection of Italian earthenware, designed by Marco and Christina Fortini; George Kovacs' desk lamp by Robert Sonneman from the New Age collection and Nourison's hand hooked, wool area rug from the Terrazzo Collection by Alex Peykar will also be recipients. The cocktail reception is from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the String & Splinter Club, 305 West High Street, Tomlinson Dining Room, Second Floor.
